Witches Fall, Cambridge Advances, Greenwich XC State Champs

State high school tournaments continued over the weekend with various sports at different stages in determining an eventual state champion.  Football played quarterfinal games while cross country ran it’s state championship meet.  Here’s how our three league teams fared in Friday and Saturday’s action.

In the state cross country meet held in Chenango Falls, the Greenwich girls captured their second consecutive Class D State Championship edging Maple Grove by just six points.

The Witches top seven runners were, Brynne Wright 2nd (18:39.6), Emma Cronin 13th (19:34.7), Annabel Gregg 19th (19:53), Quinn Collins 24th (20:01.7), Brooke Wright 50th (21:12.6), Chloe Littell 72nd (22:40.6), and Bryanna Booth 83rd (23:17.4).

Congrats to the Witches.

 

Cambridge 55  Ticonderoga 28:  The Indians jumped out to a 21-0 advantage and saw Ti battle back to make it a one possession game, before scoring the final 20 points of the game to put away the Sentinels in a Class D state quarterfinal in Schuylerville.

Cambridge quarterback junior Zack Rowland connected on 10 of 12 passes for 152 yards and three touchdowns, and senior running back Maurice Seymore ran or 111 yards and three scores to lead the Indian attack.

Cambridge advances to meet Haldane on Friday at 4 p.m. at Kingston’s Dietz Stadium in a Class D semifinal.

 

Ogdensburg Free Academy 30  Greenwich 27:  The Witches held a 27-24 lead midway through the final period before Ogdensburg put together a 97 yard drive culminating with a Joe Dalton 4-yard touchdown run with :20 remaining to defeat Greenwich in a Class C state quarterfinal in Massena.

Witches running back Reese Cristaldi rushed for 134 yards and a touchdown, and quarterback Cole Burgess ran for 91 yards with a score, and threw for 95 yards including a 30 yard touchdown connection to Bailey Winch to lead Greenwich, who complete a fine fall season with Section II title and an 8-3 overall mark.
