Heavyweight Matchups in the League Tonight

With the second half of the league schedule underway a handful of boys and girls teams remain in position to claim a Wasaren title, and tonight a pair of games may go a long way in determining the leagues champions.

In girls action Hoosic Valley and Tamarac, currently in a three-way first place tie with Hoosick Falls, get together for a run in Schaghticoke, while on the boys side of things first place Hoosick Falls pays a visit to Stillwater to take on the second place Warriors.

The first time the Valley and the Bengals met was on 12/2 and Tamarac came away with a 50-37 victory, out scoring the Indians 25-15 in the second half to claim the “W”.  Since then the Valley has handled their business winners in seven straight league outings.

The Indians average 41.6 points a night and allow just 34.4 points to opponents.  They’ve converted 35 3-pointers on the season and shoot 64.3% from the foul line.  Senior Cami Hren leads the Valley attack scoring 9.7 points nightly, with sophomore Alex Rifenburg adding 7.3 points.

Most recently Hoosic Valley topped Stillwater 51-30 at home on Tuesday night.

Tamarac also enters with a 7-1 league mark, their lone loss coming to Hoosick Falls back in December.  The Bengals score 63 points per, and allow just under 35 points a night.  Tamarac has bottomed 55 triples on the year and shoot 61.3% from the charity stripe.

They boast a trio of double digit scorers with sophomore Emily Erickson at 16.8, sophomore Renna Poulin at 11.6, and senior Hannah Kreiger at 10.1 points per.  Both Erickson and Kreiger have drilled 16 three balls on the season.

In the Bengals last outing on Tuesday they turned back the Witches of Greenwich 55-43.

For the Hoosick Falls Panthers it’s been a perfect run through league competition to date as they come into tonight’s action a perfect 8-0. The Panthers score 59 points per contest and give up 46.  They’ve hit 73 times from behind the arc, and shoot 71% from the foul line.

Four Panthers average double figures in scoring led by junior Guy Milliman at 15.7 per.  Teammates freshman Jon Kempf at 11.5, senior Alex Haynes at 10.4, and junior Evan McCart at 10.0 round out the balanced Panther attack.

The Falls defeated Saratoga Catholic 64-45 their last time out on Wednesday.

Stillwater enters tonight’s fray at 7-1 in the Wasaren, that loss coming on 12/2, a 57-40 defeat to the Falls.

The Warriors score 60.7 nightly and allow 51 points defensively.  They’ve knocked down 56 triples on the year, and shoot 65.3 from the stripe.

Senior Jared D’Aloia comes in averaging 27.6 per, including 35 makes from deep.  Senior Zack Travis adds 14.7 points to the Warrior offense, and works the glass at both ends of the floor.

Two keys among many to look for tonight.

In the girls game the question is can the Valley defense slow down the Bengals who score it at over 60 points per.  A tough task but the Indians are hard to beat on their home floor.

For the boys run, the Falls will try to limit the number of good looks that the high-scoring D’Aloia gets, and if they contain the senior guard who steps up to score for the Warriors?

A nice pair of league contests on a Friday night in the Wasaren.
