Wasaren Sportsnet Player of the Week

Congratulations to Greenwich cross county runner Brynne Wright on being named this week’s Wasaren Sportsnet Player of the Week.

On Saturday at the Section II Cross Country Championships at Saratoga Spa State Park, Brynne won the Class C race covering the 3.04 mile course in 17:54, leading the Witches to the girls cross country sectional title.

Winning at the Sectional Championships is nothing new to the Greenwich junior, as her victory on Saturday was the fourth year in a row that she’s won the Section II championship race.

Congratulations to Brynne, our newest Wasaren Sportsnet Player of the Week.

 

Stillwater Advances to State Semi’s

At a time of the year when for most teams it’s typically more difficult to post victories, the Stillwater girls soccer team continues to make it look easy.

Saturday afternoon the Warriors took the short trip to Mechanicville for a state regional match with AuSable Valley and Stillwater followed their blueprint for success, hanging crooked numbers on the board in each half while throwing a shutout defensively in coasting to a 6-0 “W”.

The Warriors scored three goals on both sides of the break with Keelyn Peacock, Brooke Picket and Teya Staie all connected on a pair of scoring strikes.

Stillwater keeper Kiersten Conroy and the Warriors defense combined for the shutout, their ninth of the year with four of those coming in post season play.

Stillwater’s dominance from the regular season has intensified in the “second season” where in five matches they’ve outscored their opponents 30-1.

With the victory the Warriors travel west this weekend to face Haldane in a Class C semifinal at Cortland High School, just one win away from a shot at the state title.

 

Witches Run Away, Earn Class C Title

73_greenwichWhat Wasaren sports program has been the most dominant over the last 15 years?  That question I’m sure produces a variety of responses. Cambridge or Hoosick Falls football. Hoosick Falls field hockey or Hoosic Valley in girls basketball quickly come to mind.

But the program that may in fact sit at the top of the list is the Greenwich girls cross country team. Continue reading →

Indians Fall in Class D Final

The Hoosic Valley Indians did something this year that’s very difficult to do in team sports. After starting their football season at 0-3 the Schaghticoke squad over the next six weekends posted “W’s” earning the right to play for the Section II Class D crown against Warrensburg Saturday afternoon at Schuylerville.

But a big piece of what brought the Indians to the title game, their ground attack, was taken away by Burghers who held the Valley to 100 rushing yards in posting the 28-6 win and claiming the Class D championship. Continue reading →

Cambridge-Salem Wears the Class C Crown

On a rainy night in Lansingburgh the Indians of Cambridge-Salem took control early then weathered a Chatham comeback before closing things out, clinching the Section II Class C championship with a 41-27 decision over the Panthers.

The combination of a talented offensive line and a pair of explosive, senior running backs in Tyler Linendoll and Tommy English have paid dividends all season and on this Friday night things were no different.  The O-line opened gaping holes and the senior tandem took advantage with Linendoll running for 242 yards with three touchdowns and English adding 153 yards with two scores.   Continue reading →

Cambridge-Salem, Hoosic Valley Play for Championships

It’s week ten of the high school football season and in each classification just two squads are left standing.  A pair of Wasaren schools are among those teams as Cambridge-Salem,(Class C), and Hoosic Valley, (Class D), will vie for sectional titles this weekend.

Cambridge-Salem, ( 9-0), will face Chatham, (8-1), tonight at Lansingburgh at 7 p.m. , while Hoosic Valley, (6-3),  takes on Warrensburg, (7-1), Saturday at Schuylerville with a 1 p.m. start. Continue reading →

Stillwater Wears Class C Crown

Wednesday was just another day at the office for the Stillwater girls soccer team.  In the Section II Class C final their office was on the turf at Mechanicville, their effort, as we’ve come to expect, outstanding and the result was a 6-0 victory over Schoharie.

The Warriors connected on five of their goals before the break and cruised to the championship earning their second straight Class C crown.

The one-sided affair provided a snapshot of what the Warriors have done all season long. Clamp down defensively, they’ve allowing just 13 goals this season, and offensively find the back of the net, their six goals Wednesday night running their total to 114 on the year.

A trio of Warriors with two goals each led the Stillwater attack with Brooke Pickett, Teya Staie and Devon Wagner all splitting the posts twice in the match.

Warrior keeper Kiersten Conway and the Stillwater defense combined for the shutout, the eighth time the Warriors have held their opponent scoreless this season and the third in their last four outings.

With the win Stillwater improves to 19-0-1 on the season and moves onto regional play, facing Ausable Valley in Mechanicville on Saturday with a scheduled 4 p.m. kickoff.
