Bengals and Panthers Fall in Semi’s

The Tamarac and Hoosick Falls softball teams took the field Friday afternoon in Class B and C Section II semifinals as the only Wasaren diamond teams still standing in post season play.

Leading Hitters:  Black Horses – Teagan Andrews 2B, HR        Caitlin Kelleher 2B, HR

With Schuylerville holding a slim 4-3 lead, the Black Horses plated nine in the bottom of the fifth to take control and post the semifinal victory over the Bengals.

 

Greenville 2  Hoosick Falls 1

Winning Pitcher:  Maurice  7 IP  2 Hits  12 K’s

Leading Hitters:  Greenville – Gibson 2-3, RBI        Panthers – Marissa Landry 1-3       Lily Abbott 1-3

In a game where the two teams combined for five hits and 10 base runners, Greenville scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first and made then stand, to earn the Class C semifinal victory over the Falls.

It was a tough day for Wasaren teams in the Section II baseball and softball tournaments with seven league squads taking the field in quarterfinal and semifinal games, and at day’s end just the Tamarac and Hoosick Falls girls were left standing.

Trailing 4-3 entering the fifth, a Brownell double tied things and with Brownell advancing to third on an error, Landry lays down the squeeze, giving the Falls the lead which they didn’t give back in this Class C quarterfinal.    Continue reading

Eleven Wasaren teams stepped on the field Monday as the Section II baseball and softball tournaments begin a week that will end with champions being crowned in every classification.

Here’s how things played out for the conference squads.

Softball

Cambridge Girls Place Second in Schuylerville Classic

cambridge pictureThe Cambridge girls track and field team earned a second place finish at the Schuylerville Classic on Friday night. The host Black Horses won the meet with 104 points followed by Cambridge with 88 points, pacing the 17 team event.

Greenwich (51 1/2), Mechanicville (47), and Saratoga Catholic (36) held down places 5-7.

Individual winners from Wasaren squads included Cambridge’s Miranda Seacord in the 100, Spa Catholic’s Grace O’Reilly 400, Greenwich’s Annabel Gregg 800, Cambridge’s Vanessa Evans 1 mile, Cambridge’s Ruth Nolan 400 hurdles, Mechanicville’s Jade Brown high jump, and Greenwich’s Danielle McFee discus.

The Mechanicville 800 meter relay team also earned a first place finish.

On the boys side of things South Glens Falls claimed the title with 100 points.  Cambridge (44), Mechanicville (24), and Spa Catholic (15) finished 7th, 8th and 10th respectively.  Greenwich with (7) and Berlin with 5 points rounded out the Wasaren teams.

Cambridge’s Jordan Brown earned a first place finish in the 400 meter hurdles for the Indians.

Greenwich Girls, Stillwater Boys Earn Wasaren Crowns

The Greenwich girls dominated the distance events and the Stillwater boys showed dominance across the boards as the Witches and Warriors captured titles in the Wasaren League championships on Wednesday in Stillwater.

Greenwich with 162 points, Stillwater with 149 points and Hoosic Valley with 104 points were the top three teams in the girls meet.

Double winners for the girls included Mechanicville’s Jada Brown, 100 and 200, Stillwater’s Madison Krochina, shot put and discus, Hoosic Valley’s Lauren Reed, long jump and triple jump, and the Stillwater relay teams in the 400 and 1600.

Stillwater with 149 points, Hoosic Valley with 89 points and Waterford with 65 points were the top three in the boys competition.

Multiple winners included Stillwater’s Joe Conti, 100 and 200, Greenwich’s Michael Gabriel shot put and discus, Stillwater’s Dylan Morin, long jump and triple jump, Greenwich’s Peyton Howard, 800 and 1600, and the Stillwater relay teams in the 400, 1600, and 3200.

Leading Hitters:  Saints – Dylan Custer 1B, RBI

In a pitcher’s duel between Spa Catholic’s Terel Tillman and the Witches Christian O’Brien the Saints pushed across single runs in the second and seventh innings, more than enough offense to support Tillman’s one-hit gem, as Saratoga Catholic earns the Wasaren championship.    Continue reading

Tamarac Clinches Hudson Division

In what was a good race for the softball crown in the Hudson division of the Wasaren, the Bengals of Tamarac earned the title with a 6-3 victory over Greenwich on Monday afternoon.

Wasaren Sportsnet Players of the Week

47_tamaracCongratulations to Tamarac baseball player Jake Scharnott and Tamarac softball player Maggie Kelley on being named Wasaren Sportsnet Players of the Week.

Scharnott started a big week with a 3-5 day including a pair of doubles and an RBI in a 14-3 win over Stillwater.

On Monday Jake was the winning pitcher in a 5-4 victory over Hoosic Valley, while doubling twice in four plate appearances.

Tuesday, in a win over Berlin, Scharnott enjoyed a 6-6 afternoon, ripping three doubles and plating four, and he closed out the week with a pair of doubles and an RBI in the Bengals 5-4 decision over Greenwich.

Kelley picked up a pair of pitching wins over the weekend scattering eight hits in a 7-2 victory over Lansingburgh, and allowed just four hits in a 12-1 win over CCHS as the Bengals claimed the championship in the Uncle Sam Softball Tournament.

On Wednesday Maggie went five innings, giving up three hits while fanning 10 in a 20-1 “W” over Cambridge, and followed that with a six-hit shutout of Saratoga Catholic on Thursday.

Mechanicville scored in each of the first three innings, building a 4-0 advantage, and went on to post the road win over the Indians of Cambridge.
