Mechanicville Tops Greenville

Mechanicville 5   Greenville 2

The Mechanicville boys’ soccer team has been a dominant program in Section II for years, currently riding an unbeaten streak in league play that seemingly dates back to the Bush administration.  Last night, under the lights in Mechanicville the home squad was tested by the heat and humidity as well as a talented Greenville squad and came away with a well-earned 5-2 “W”.

Mechanicville opened the scoring at the 31:00 mark when Scotty Lynch lofted a free kick into the box from 60 yards out, that caromed off a Greenville defender, splitting the posts for a 1-0 advantage.

Six minutes before the break Greenville answered on a Harrison McAneny tally and the two squads were knotted at 1-1 heading into the intermission.

After the break Mechanicville wasted little time in regaining the lead when just 1:00 in, Lynch went top shelf off a free kick from 20 yards out for the 2-1 edge.

At the 26:00-mark Mechanicville’s Rece Dyer ripped a rocket off the left wing that the Greenville keeper got a hand on, but the ball found the net for the two-goal cushion at 3-1.

Greenville refused to go quietly on this tropical evening drawing closer when Joseph Davis found the range with 20:35 left in the match and the visitors trailed by one.

Three minutes later Logan Starks lofted a beautiful corner kick that found Mark Pingelski rising above the fray, and his header found the back of the net and Mechanicville held the comfortable 4-2 lead.

With under one-minute remaining Cruz Goverski closed out the scoring, connecting for Mechanicville’s fifth tally of the match, capping Mechanicville’s third victory in as many outings.
