Saturday Recap: Mechanicville, Waterford Earn Wins

The Saturday afternoon match in Mechanicville between the Class D Loudonville Christian and Class B Mechanicville with both teams holding the #4 state ranking in their classifications, played out as one would expect.  The match was played primarily in the midfield area with both squads having a few scoring chances.  

Mechanicville was first to capitalize on a scoring opportunity when Tom Wendel was on the money with a cross that found Ethan Raucci who finished for the 1-0 advantage.

That score stood until nine minutes remained in regulation when Ethan Quadrini off a direct kick found the upper corner knotting the score at 1-1.

But the home squad quickly responded with the game-winner, with Mark Pingelski redirected a free kick from Jacob Eiseman that deflected off the L/C keeper for the deciding score.  

Mechanicville keeper Joey Devito saved five shots in the match and L/C goaltender Liam Deeb stopped 10 shots for the Eagles.  

 

Waterford 5   Greenwich 2

In a game played with heavy rain falling at the new turf field in Greenwich, Waterford jumped out to a 3-0 lead and weathered a Greenwich comeback, and the elements to post the “W”.

Six minutes in, Waterford was on the board on a rebound off an Anthony Scunziano corner for the 1-0 advantage.

In the 27th minute Josh Catanzarita connected on a direct kick for the 2-0 Fordian lead.    

Ten minutes later the bothers Catanzarita hooked up when Jake found Josh, off a direct kick and the visitors held a comfortable 3-0 cushion.  

The Witches got on the board before the break when Evan Merrill cleaned up a loose ball in front trimming the lead to 3-1.

Midway through the second half with the rain intensifying, Greenwich drew closer on a Josh Poovey breakaway cutting the deficit to 3-2.

In the 66th minute Tristan Carutasu put away a bobbled ball in front and Waterford regained a two score lead at 4-2.

Minutes later Waterford added an insurance tally when Josh Catanzarita, on a penalty kick, drove a hard shot at the keeper that deflected back and Catanzarita converted the rebound for his third goal of the match. 

Fordian keeper Logan Kelly saved eight shots in the game while two Greenwich keepers combined to save 13 attempts for the Witches.
