Cambridge/Salem Gets Past Stillwater/Spa Catholic, Stillwater Girls Roll, Mechanicville Girls Fall

Leading 13-12 at the break, Cambridge/Salem took control with a pair of third quarter touchdown runs and held off Stillwater/Spa Catholic to earn the Class D semifinal win on Saturday.

The two squads exchanged scoring drives over the first two periods with Still/Spa taking a 6-0 lead, Cam/Sal edging in front 7-6 on a Jackson Rowland TD run, Still/Spa responding with an Aidan Callanan 20-yard scoring sprint, before Cam/Salem capped the first half with Rowland’s second touchdown carry of the game for a 13-12 lead.

In the third, after a Stillwater/Spa turnover Preston Peabody scored on a 43-yard gallop and minutes later Rowland rang the bell for the third time, with a 48-yard scoring run extending C/S’s lead to 29-12.

Still/Spa struck first in the fourth on a Callanan 45-yard scoring strike to John Williams, but C/S quickly responded when Stephen Yakubec found Rowland for six, ending any hopes of a Still/Spa comeback.

With the win Cambridge/Salem, (9-1) advances to the Class D championship game where they’ll meet the undefeated Witches of Greenwich next weekend.  

Stillwater/Spa Catholic wraps up a fine season with a 5-4 mark.

Stillwater broke open a 1-0 game at the half with four tallies after the break to notch the win in Class C regional play.

Brooke Hodgson with a hat trick and Lucy Rubenstein with a pair of goals led the Stillwater attack.

Stillwater keeper Ally Liamero combined with the Stillwater defense for the squad’s 16th shutout of the year.

Stillwater, (20-1) advances to the Class C state semifinals on Saturday and a matchup with Section IX’s Burke Catholic.

Marcellus 7   Mechanicville 3 

Leading 3-2 at the half, Marcellus broke open the game with four second half goals to post the Class B regional finals win over Mechanicville.

Cece Powell with four goals and Lexie Fragnito with three led the Marcellus attack.  

Gianna Pitts scored twice, and Emma Andrews added a single tally for Mechanicville who finish an excellent season with a 16-5 mark and Wasaren and Section II titles.
