Six Wasaren squads will play in quarterfinal games tonight in Class C with four boy squads and a pair of girls’ teams looking to advance to Class C semis with a win tonight.
Girls
#1 Greenwich vs. #9 OESJ
The top-seeded Witches come in off an 88-29 demolition of KIPP in round one. Brooke Kuzmich with 29 points, Jordan Wolfe with 25 points and Bailee Wolfe with 23 led the way for the 20-1 Greenwich quintet.
OESJ slipped past Galway 43-39 in first round action and have put together a nice season at 16-4. That season comes to end tonight.
Look for Greenwich to post a comfortable “W” here.
#2 Stillwater vs. #7 Maple Hill
Stillwater boasts a 19-2 mark and enters off an 84-16 decision over Bishop Gibbons in the opening round. Addison Thorton dropped 36 points with six triples, while Maddie Chatt with 15 and Leiann Thompson with 10 points rounded out a trio of double-digit scorers.
Maple Hill had an easy time in round one besting Warrensburg 59-20 and have put together a 13-win campaign thus far.
Stillwater simply too good and will punch their ticket to the semifinal round tonight.
Boys
#4 Cambridge vs. #12 Rensselaer
Cambridge enters with a 16-5 mark after topping Hoosic Valley 73-48 in round one. Connor Genevick led the way in the victory with 24 points while Luke MacDougal and Myles Matteson added 16 and 12 respectively.
Rensselaer bested Fort Plain 66-52 in the opening round and the Rams show a9-11 record on the year.
With a few common opponents this year the most relevant may be Tamarac who beat the Rams 75-41 early in the season, while Cambridge topped Tamarac 69-61 in mid-January.
I like Cambridge’s perimeter shooting, 13 threes in round one, and their overall ability to score.
Look for Cambridge to get past a solid Rensselaer squad.
#2 Duanesburg vs. #7 Stillwater
Duanesburg has posted 18 wins this year, the latest a 65-27 victory over Lake George. They have won 8 of their last nine entering tonight’s game.
Stillwater comes in at 14-7 after a comfortable 76-59 first-round “W” over Middlebury. Stillwater put three players in doubles in the win with Mason Wagner scoring 26 with six triples, Rocco Schneller dropping 22 and Vinny Parella adding 12 points.
Stillwater are 4-1 in their last five and can score with anyone in the C’s. Look for Stillwater to pull the mild upset in a close one.
#3 Spa Catholic vs. #6 Greenwich
Spa Catholic made easy work of Loudonville Christian in round one, notching a 78-45 win to run their record to 15-6. Jason Thompson led the Saints attack with a 20-point effort with teammates David Kingston and Thomas Zayac adding 14 and 11 points. Spa Catholic drilled 11 long balls in the win.
Greenwich at 15-6, took care of Schoharie in the opening round posting a 59-53 victory. Ethan Mullen with 18 points, Mike Cronin with 16, Langston Hall 12 and Omar DeJesus with 10 rounded out a quartet of double figure scorers in the win.
The two Wasaren squads split in the regular season with Greenwich earning a 58-44 victory in December and Spa Catholic returning the favor with an 82-59 “W” in mid-February.
Injuries have hurt the Witches the last month although they’ve remained very competitive despite being down two starters.
I’ll give the nod to the Saints tonight with the Witches having a “puncher’s chance”.
