Another Strong Winter Season for the Wasaren

This past weekend the four-month basketball season wrapped up with the Final Four in all state classifications playing out. Despite how difficult it is to make it to the final weekend of play, more often than not you’ll find a Wasaren squad competing, and this year was no exception with the girls of Mechanicville and Greenwich representing in Class B and C respectively.

The league showed its prowess throughout the “second season” as is typically the case starting in the Section II tournament.

On the boy’s side the Bengals of Tamarac advanced to the Class B semifinals where their fine season came to a close.

In Class C the Final Four was nearly a Wasaren Invitational with Cambridge, Spa Catholic and Stillwater joining Berne-Knox in the semifinal round. Cambridge faced Knox and played well before falling to the eventual Section II champion, while Stillwater got past the Saints of Saratoga Catholic in the other semi matchup, setting up a Stillwater/Berne-Knox title run in which BK prevailed.

Congratulations to these four teams on good sectional runs and excellent winter seasons.

On the girl’s side four more Wasaren squads enjoyed great success in the Section II tourney and beyond.

Mechanicville earned the Class B sectional title, Spa Catholic won it all in Class D and in a Wasaren matchup in Class C between Stillwater and Greenwich, the Witches flipped the script on Stillwater from a year ago, coming away with the Sectional championship.

Spa Catholic’s special season ended in regional play, while both Mechanicville and Greenwich added regional titles to their impressive season’s resume.

Mechanicville carried their post season run all the way to the B semi’s before their outstanding campaign came to a close.

Greenwich took it one step further, reaching the C state title game where they lost a heartbreaker to close out a spectacular year.

Individually, six players from the league joined 1000, or in one case the 2000 career points scored club, and coaching wise Hoosick Falls Mikle Lilac Jr. became the all-time winningest coach in league history.

Another quality winter campaign for the Wasaren who once again showed why the league for decades has been recognized as one of the premier small school conferences in the state.

Congratulations to all.
