Key Stat:  Greenwich connected 10 times from the free throw line while Waterford converted just four.

Take Away:  Trailing 17-12 at the quarter break, Greenwich outscored the Fordians 37-22 over the next two periods to gain control.

Take Away:  Academy ran out to a 19-4 lead after the first frame on their way to the comfortable win over Cambridge.

Key Stat:  Tamarac converted 15 of 25 free throws while the Saints made 5 of 12 from the stripe. 

Take Away:  Faraj and Beaudoin combine for 55 points as Tamarc puts 75 on the board including a 30-point third frame in the one-sided decision.

Key Stat:  Duanesburg made more free throws than Mechanicville attempted converting 16 of 20 while Mechanicville connected on 5 of 8 from the stripe.  

Take Away:  Duanesburg built a 35-17 advantage by halftime and used that cushion and a big night from O’Hanlon to notch the victory.

Key Stat:  Greenwich outscored their guests 48-22 after the break.

Take Away:  Curtis and Ingber combine for 53 and Greenwich uses a big second half to notch the victory.

Cohoes 35   Waterford 33

Leading Scorers:  Tigers – Carli O’Hara 9   Kaelyn Greene 9      Fordians – Maddy Atwood 15

Key Stat:  Cohoes ran pout to a 20-9 lead at the half.

Take Away:  Cohoes built a double digit lead early and hung on for the win in opening night for both teams.

Stillwater 21   Haldane 20

In a Class D state semifinal where both teams, led, trailed and were tied, it took a defensive stop on a two-point conversion try with seconds remaining to give Stillwater a one-point “W” and send them to the state championship game next weekend in Syracuse.

Haldane, from Section I took an early 7-0 lead on the second play from scrimmage when Evan Giachinta scored on a 49-yard run.

But Stillwater answered with their vaunted ground attack, tying things later in the period on a four-yard touchdown run by Jaxon Mueller.

In the second frame Mueller doubled and tripled down with two more four-yard runs for points and Stillwater held a two-score advantage at 21-7.

Haldane narrowed the gap before the break on a Ryan Van Tassel 53-yard scoring run sending the teams to intermission with Stillwater holding a 21-14 cushion.

After the break, despite dominating time of possession including an 11:00 drive in the third that was stopped at the Haldane one-yard line, Stillwater was held scoreless.

Haldane was kept off the board as well until late in the fourth when with 1:42 left a Stillwater fumble gave Haldane life.

The Blue Devils connected on a 22-yard pass play on fourth down with :21 remaining, and on the next play Van Tassel found Gianchinta with a 33-yard scoring strike and Haldane was within one at 21-20.

The Blue Devils rolled the dice going for the win on a two-point try, but Haldane QB Van Tassel was hit as he threw and the ball fell incomplete sending Stillwater onto the title game on December 2nd at the JMA Wireless Dome where they’ll play top-seeded Tioga (13-0), from Section IV for the Class D crown.  

Stillwater 28   Moriah 20

In a Class D state quarterfinal game that was close throughout, Stillwater used a dominating ground attack and a big defensive play late, to get past Moriah in action at Mechanicville on Saturday.

Moriah of section VII broke on top when Joe Pelkey found Dieter Olcott with a 33-yard scoring strike and a 6-0 lead. 

Stillwater quickly answered with James Cocozzo crashing in from a yard out and with the point after Stillwater led 7-6 after the first period of play.

Stillwater scored the only points of the second quarter when Jaxon Mueller threw his only pass of the game finding Thomas McDonough on a 19-yard TD connection and Stillwater took a 14-6 lead into the break.

Moriah cut the margin with the only third period points on a Logan Gilbo one yard touchdown run, but the two-point conversion attempt failed as the teams headed to the final frame with Stillwater nursing a 14-12 advantage.

With 5:40 remaining Meuller gave Stillwater a two-score cushion on a 13-yard rushing score and with the point after a 21-12 cushion.

That cushion quickly dissolved as Moriah used a three-play drive capped by a Pelkey to Olcott 23-yard touchdown pass and with the two-point conversion Moriah trailed 21-10.

The Vikings then recovered an on-sides kick and were set up at the Stillwater 45 with 4:30 left in regulation.

But Stillwater’s McDonough had other ideas, stepping in front of a Pelkey pass and taking it 63 yards for six, sending the Section II squad to a state semifinal matchup with Haldane (Section I) at Middleton High School on Friday at 3 p.m. 

Lucas Lilac led the Stillwater ground game finishing with 134 yards on 30 carries while Mueller added 80 yards on 18 totes.  Lilac has now run for 1611 yards on the year setting the single season rushing record at Stillwater.   

Waterford 2   Mount Academy 2

The Fordians of Waterford repeated as Class C state champions on Sunday, earning a share of the title after battling Mount Academy to a 2-2 tie in the title game at Homer High School in Cortland.

The Fordians broke on top when Addy Galuski connected on a scoring strike early in the first half.

But Mount Academy answered with goals from Hayley and Brooke Huleatt before the break, taking the 2-1 advantage into intermission.

The Fordians searched for the tying score through nearly the entire second half and it came with 3:00 remaining when Mia O’Brien found Riley Noto for the finish, sending the game into overtime.

Neither squad was able to score through two overtime sessions and the match ended with the Fordians and Mount Academy recognized as co-state champions. 

Waterford finishes a remarkable season at 19-1-3 with league, section, regional and state championships.
