Mechanicville Girls Earn Class B Soccer Championship

Gianna Pitts connected on three tallies leading the victorious Mechanicville squad to the Class B soccer title, their second in as many years.  

Mechanicville took the lead just seven minutes in when Pitts connected on her first goal of the game, only to have Schuylerville answer 12 seconds later on a Vaugh Reilly tally knotting the score at 1-1, a score that stood into the halftime break.

At the 7:11 mark of the second half Mechanicville regained the lead when a Pitts header found the net.

With 18:00 left Pitts split the posts for her third scoring strike of the match giving Mechanicville the two-goal advantage that lasted just one minute as Schuylerville quickly responded when Mia Oshal connected.

But the Mechanicville defense held the Black Horses at bay the rest of the match to seal the “W” and send Mechanicville onto the state regionals on Wednesday where they’ll face Section VII champion Saranac (9-6-2) in regional play. 

 

Greenville 4   Mechanicville 0     Saturday

Top-seeded Greenville used a pair of goals in each half and a lockdown defensive effort in posting the win over Mechanicville to earn the Class B soccer championship.

A pair of Chris Hughes scoring strikes sandwiched around tallies from Beckett Kusich and Alex Ingalls provided more than enough offensively for the Greenville victory.

Mechanicville completes an excellent season finishing with a 13-6-1 mark.  

 

Cambridge-Salem 27   Bethlehem 26    Saturday

C/S quarterback Stephen Yakubec threw a pair of touchdown passes and ran for another in the cross-over victory over Bethlehem.

Yakubec connected in scoring strikes to Colin Rowland and Myles Mattson, to go with a one-yard touchdown run and Preston Peabody added an interception return for six in the narrow “W” for Cambridge-Salem. 

 

 

Hoosick Falls/Tamarac Advances to the Class C Semi’s

Hoosick Falls/Tamarac 27   Cobleskill Richmondville 10

HF/T built a 14-2 lead entering the final frame and put the game away with a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns, earning the Class C quarterfinal win on Friday.

August Lee and Owen Hart with rushing scores staked the Wildcats to a 14-0 lead at the break.  

After C/R got on the board with a safety in the third period, HF/T opened the fourth with a 19-yard scoring strike from Hart to Gabe Toomijian and so after Glenn Milliman added an eight-yard rushing score to seal the victory.

Lee led a strong Wildcat ground game gaining 128 yards on 31 carries while Milliman added 56 yards on 14 totes.

HF/Tam advances to the Class C semifinal round and a matchup with the top-seeded Black Horses of Schuylerville.

 

Mechanicville 28   Canajoharie/Ft. Plain 12

With the two squads tied 12-12 entering the fourth period, Mechanicville scored the final 16 points of the night to post the win over Canjo/Ft. Plain in a Class C crossover game.

Mechanicville running back Jordan Barnes led the way with 186 yards on 20 carries and two scores with Ayden Ellis adding a 25-yard touchdown run and quarterback Stephen Doty hooking up on a 68-yard scoring strike with Caine Ray for Mechanicville. 

 

 

 

Stillwater Girls Move to the Class C Final

Stillwater took the lead less than three minutes in and never looked back in posting the comfortable semifinal win over OESJ in Class C.

At the 2:37 mark Bridget Coon, off a feed from her sister Brooke, gave Stillwater the 1-0 advantage and that score stood until late in the half when Brooke Hodgson and Kamryn VanPelt connected on scoring strikes, both set up by Bridget Coon, giving Stillwater a commanding 3-0 lead at the break.

Late in the match VanPelt added her second tally of the game off a Lucy Rubenstein find to cap the scoring.

Stillwater keeper Ally Liamero stopped three shots and with the Stillwater defense earned the shutout.

Top-seeded Stillwater moves to the C championship game on Saturday taking on #2 Lake George.  It will be the second meeting of the year between the two squads with Stillwater notching a 2-0 decision over Lake George in mid-September.

 

 

Mechanicville Girls Advance to B Finals, Waterford, Greenwich Boys Fall in Semi’s

Top-seeded Mechanicville wasted little time taking control, running out to a 4-0 lead by the break and cruised from there to the semifinal win in Class B.

Tanner Eiseman led the way with a four-goal match, while teammates Gianna Pitts and Ella Manning added single scoring strikes.

Mechanicville keeper Christina Bornt saved four shots in the win.

Mechanicville moves to the championship game on Saturday in Lansingburgh where they’ll face the second-seeded Black Horses of Schuylerville.

 

Maple Hill 1   Waterford 0

Late in the first half off a long free kick, Tyler Gibson cleaned up a loose ball in the box for the only goal of the night sending Maple Hill to the Class C championship game on Saturday.   

Waterford ends a great fall season with a 15-3-1 record and Co-Champions of the Wasaren.

 

Berne-Knox Westerlo 2   Greenwich 1

In a game knotted 1-1 at the half, BKW scored the game winner late in regulation to earn the win and advance to the C final this weekend.

BKW took a 1-0 just nine minutes in before Greenwich tied the score late in the half on a Mason Foster tally.

Greenwich completes an outstanding soccer season at 16-1-2 and Co-Champions of the Wasaren.  

 

 

Mechanicville Moves to Class B Title Game

Mechanicville entered sectional play dropping three of their last four regular season matches, the squads worst four-game stretch since seemingly the Bush administration.  But through three rounds of the Section II Tournament the Raiders are competing more like the teams that put together a 100-game unbeaten streak in Wasaren play.

With a pair of 2-1 wins over Watervliet and Voorheesville in rounds one and two, #3 Mechanicville entered the Class B semifinal against #7 Broadalbin-Perth playing with the confidence of a championship program that has enjoyed extended play-off runs for most seasons in recent memory. 

On Tuesday in Waterford, Mechanicville extended this post season streak using goals in each half and a lockdown defensive effort to post the 2-0 victory over B-P.  

Graham Murphy connected on scoring strikes before and after the halftime break, and the Mechanicville defense, anchored by keeper Brady O’Connor, kept B-P off the board throughout.  

O’Connor had an outstanding game between the posts turning away 12 shots in the match for the clean sheet.

With the win Mechanicville improves to 13-5-1 and moves to the Class B title game on Saturday in Queensbury and a matchup with top-seeded Greenville who sports a 17-2 mark including a 5-0 win over Mechanicville in late September. 

 

 

  

Sectional Soccer: Stillwater Girls, Greenwich and Waterford Boys Advance

Stillwater took control with three, first-half tallies and cruised from there to the quarterfinal victory over Mayfield in Class C.

Brooke Hodgson led the way with a hat trick while Bridget Coon and Kennedie VanPelt added single scoring strikes for Stillwater.

Stillwater keeper Ally Liamero saved four shots and with the Stillwater defense posted the shutout.

Top-seeded advances to the semifinals and a matchup with #5 OESJ. 

 

OESJ 3   Waterford 2    OT

Trailing 2-1 at the break, Waterford knotted the score with a second half strike sending the game into overtime where OESJ connected on the game-winner in a Girls Class C quarterfinal match.  

The Fordians wrap an excellent season finishing with a 12-6 mark.

Waterford 4   Loudonville Christian 0

The Fordians used a pair of scores in each half and a lockdown defensive effort in notching the quarterfinal win over LC in Class C action.

The match remained scoreless through the first 30-plus minutes, before Waterford connected on two scores one minute apart.

In the 34th minute the Fordians were awarded a penalty kick that Payton Galuski cashed in for the 1-0 lead and seconds later Galuski finished a Conner Belonga find for the 2-0 Fordian advantage that Waterford took to the break.

Just three minutes into the second half Jake Catanzarita found Belonga who found the back of the net giving Waterford a three-goal cushion, and Galuski capped the scoring in the waning minutes, ringing the bell from 25 yards out for her third goal of the match.

Fordian keeper Tristan Philo stopped seven shots and with the Waterford “D” earned the clean sheet.

#4 Waterford moves on to face #1 Maple Hill on Wednesday in a semifinal match at Columbia High School. 

 

Greenwich 3   Lake George 1

The Witches built a 2-0 lead by halftime and rode that cushion to the quarterfinal win over the Lakers in Boys Class C play.

Less than one minute into the match Greenwich was on the board when Christian Morency found Owen Shannon at the top of the box who split the posts for the 1-0 lead.

In the 33rd minute Greenwich extended their advantage when Noah Ives sent a cross, back post, to a cutting Hudson Logan for the put away and a 2-0 cushion.

Lake George answered with five minutes left in the half when James Richards connected from the corner of the box trimming the deficit to 2-1.

The two teams battled through a scoreless second half until two minutes remained when Ives slipped past the LG defense and beat the Laker keeper to seal the “W”.

#2 Greenwich advances to the C semi’s and a matchup with #6 BKW/D on Wednesday at Columbia High. 

 

Maple Hill 3   Cambridge-Salem 0

Top-seeded Maple Hill ran out to a 2-0 halftime lead, added an insurance goal after the break and closed out the quarterfinal win in Class C.  

Cambridge-Salem ends a fine fall campaign at 11-5-1

Sectional Soccer: Mechanicville Wins Twice

Mechanicville 2   Voorheesville 1

Mechanicville led 1-0 at the break, extended their lead after intermission to 2-0 and held off the Blackbirds late to post the win in Class B.

Mechanicville keeper Brady O’Connor came up with a big save on a penalty kick in the first half and the home squad fed off of that, soon after striking for their first score on an Aiden Fitzgerald finish off a nice find by Graham Murphy.

Murphy gave Mechanicville a two-score cushion taking an Alex Shakow feed and splitting the posts for a second-half tally.

Voorheesville got on the board Angelo Filho connected, but the Mechanicville defense shut down the visitors attack the rest of the way to secure the “W”.

#3 Mechanicville moves to the semifinals and a matchup with #7 Broadalbin-Perth in Waterford on Tuesday at 5p.m.

Mechanicville ran out to a 3-0 lead by halftime and cruised from there to the quarterfinal win in Class B.

Tanner Eiseman, Gianna Pits and Emma Andrews all found the range with scoring strikes to lead the Mechanicville attack.

Mechanicville keeper Christina Bornt saved three shots and combined with the defense to post the shutout.

Top-seeded Mechanicville moves on to face #4 Greenville in the semifinal round.

Cambridge-Salem 49   Canajoharie 6

C/S quarterback Stephen Yakubec threw for 184 yards and three touchdowns to lead C/S to the easy victory over Canjo.  

Jackson Rowland led a dominant ground game for C/S, rushing for 98 yards and a score.  

With the win Cambridge/Salem moves to 7-1 on the season.

Saturday Morning Roundup: Waterford, Stillwater Girls Cruise to Soccer Wins

Stillwater 5   Holy Names 1

Stillwater built a 3-0 lead by the break, on their way to the comfortable first-round win in Class C sectional play.

A pair of Brooke Hodgson goals sandwiched around a Bridget Coon tally staked Stillwater to the three-score halftime cushion.

After intermission Hodgson connected for her second goal of the match before Holy Names got on the board with a Grace Crosby strike.

Top-seeded Stillwater wrapped up the scoring when Brooke Coon split the posts off a Bridget Coon find, Bridget’s third assist of the game.  

Stillwater keeper Ally Liamero saved one shot in the win, while Holy Names goaltender Sophia Schenk turned away 12 shots in defeat.

 

Waterford 8   Berne-Knox Westerlo/Duanesburg 1

The Fordians rang the bell eight times with four different players doing damage in posting the one-sided decision over BKW/D in Class C.

Mia O’Brien led the scoring assault with four scoring strikes while Riley Noto netted a pair and Sophia Ledtke and Rylan Charbonneau added single tallies for Waterford.

#3 Waterford will host a quarterfinal matchup on Monday with #5 OESJ.

Lake George broke open a 1-0 game at the break with four second-half hits, pulling away for the win in Class C action.

 

Mayfield 2   Hoosic Valley 1

Mayfield led 1-0 at halftime and held off the Valley to earn the win in Class C.  

Ava VanNostrand and Riley Roth connected for goals to lead Mayfield.

Hoosick Falls/Tamarac 20   Mechanicville 8

Wildcat quarterback Owen Hart threw for a score and ran for another to lead HF/T to the victory over Mechanicville in Hoosick Falls Friday night.

Hart found Gabe Toomijian in the first quarter for a three-yard touchdown pass and a 6-0 lead.

Mechanicville edged in front on a second period one-yard plunge and with the two-point conversion held an 8-6 advantage.

HF/T regained the lead on a two-yard TD run by Hart taking a 12-6 cushion into the break.

After a scoreless third frame HF/T put the game away when August Lee ran it in from eight yards out and with the two-point conversion the 20-8 final.

Lee anchored the Wildcat attack, rushing for 192 yards on 38 carries, while Hart finished with 68 passing yards connecting on 5 of 10 attempts.
