Stillwater Boys Basketball Preview

stillwater warriorWhile Stillwater will have a new head coach this season, as Bruce Lilac takes over for Dave Cook, they’ll be plenty of familiar faces wearing the Warrior maroon and white.

Seven players return for Stillwater this year as Brian McNeil, James Galarneau, Mason Seymour, Grant Baker, Scott Travis, Cooper Monast and Matt Breslin all started or saw quality minutes for the Warriors just a season ago.

Lilac has liked what he’s seen from his group in the early going.  “The preseason has been great.  The kids are working hard to get better and tougher.  This group realizes they must come and work every night if they want to win in our league.” Continue reading

In basketball circles the Wasaren has long been known as one of the premier small school leagues in the state.  The conference schedule’s a gauntlet run with no nights off, teams knowing if they don’t bring their “A” game they’ll head home with a loss.

That being said the Hoosick Falls Panthers over the last five seasons have simply dominated the league. Winners in 70 of their last 72 league games, including 40 straight have led to five consecutive Wasaren crowns for the Panthers.

“Our kids have always enjoyed playing with a target on their backs and keeping “it” going”, said longtime head coach Mike Lilac. “They proudly accept upholding that tradition.” Continue reading

A handful of league teams ran the floor on Friday night, the majority playing non-league opponents with the Wasaren schedule set to begin next week.

Leading Scorers:  Indians – Lily Phillips 23      Sophie Phillips 17      Fiona Mooney 13     Seward – Alexa Roach 17     Josely Medina 13

Key Stat:  How about a 31 point quarter in your season-opener.  Back that with an 18 point second period and Cambridge has half a hundred on the board at the half.  Lily Phillips knocks down five triples and 23 points before the break, all leading to Cambridge facing Cooperstown this afternoon in the championship game of the Delaware Academy Tip-Off Tournament.

Take Away:  The Indians are a young squad with three sophomores in the starting lineup. That trio combined for 53 points and 10 made threes, and this team as the season unfolds will only get better.   Continue reading

To start, four key players return for head coach Rian Richardson in senior Nick Billert, junior Josh Germaine, and sophomores Devin Garland and Luciano D’Ambro.  They bring a variety of skill sets to the floor every night. Continue reading

Mechanicville Bowlers Post Win over Corinth

redraider

After winning the bowling championship last year in the Colonial Council Mechanicville was told they wouldn’t be allowed to compete this year in the Colonial.  No problem.

On Monday the Mechanicville squad picked up where they left off posting a dominant win over Corinth as part of the Wasaren Division in the Adirondack League.

The Raiders held a 3686 – 2375 in total pins over the Tomahawks in the match at Hometown Lanes.

Leading the way for Mechanicville was junior captain Jacob LaFountain with games of 226 277 214 for a 714 triple.   Senior captain Joshua Kalwasinski fired a 690 triple with games of 175 259 and 256.

Sophomore Glenn Prarie added a 643 triple and sophomore Carmen Morizio  with a 494 triple all equaled a 4-0 match win for the Raiders.
