Panthers Defeat Cambridge

thCA7HET46

It was just another Friday night at the office for the Hoosick Falls Panthers.  After suffering through a poor shooting first period that ended with Cambridge holding a 14-10 lead, the Falls did what they do, which is everything well, outscoring the Indians 45-18 over the middle two quarters in posting the 69-44 road “W”.

Both teams scored on their first possession of the night, Tristan Williams for the Falls with Nick Murphy answering for Cambridge, then the two squads went cold with the next points in the game coming at the 4:30 mark on a Ben Epler corner three, giving Cambridge a 5-2 lead.

With the game tied at 8-8 late in the quarter, the Indians used a pair of long balls from Brian Hall and Epler, to take a 14-10 advantage into the second frame. Continue reading

Cambridge Runs Past Hoosic Valley

girlsbball-300x195

I got my first look at the Cambridge girls basketball team Wednesday night and it appears not much has changed from a year ago when the Indians earned the New York state Class C championship.

An almost identical roster, albeit a year older, playing with the familiar up tempo style that ultimately overwhelms opponents.

Last night Cambridge ran past Hoosic Valley 72-25, placing five players in doubles and they made it look easy.

The Indians from the north, ran out to a 9-0 start on six points from junior forward McKayla McLenithan and a wing three from junior guard Lily Phillips, while holding the Valley scoreless through the first four minutes.

But a baseline jumper from Sam Lanoue gave Hoosic Valley life and the Indians rattled off nine unanswered on a triple from Emaleigh Peckham and a pair of buckets from Anna Jensen and Ashlyn Chartier to draw even with 1:50 left in the period.

Cambridge closed the quarter with five straight on another 3-ball from Lily Phillips and two free throws from her sister Sophie, taking a 14-9 lead into the second.

Over the next eight minutes Cambridge was simply dominant, defensively forcing the Valley into committing more turnovers, (10), than points they would score, (9), while turning those giveaways into easy opportunities.

A Sophie longball got things started for Cambridge followed by a Fiona Mooney inside bucket off a nice find from Lily, and after a Chartier basket for the Valley, Cambridge  outscored the Indians 25-6 over the remainder of the quarter.

The run was led by Lily Phillips who scored 11, and Ruth Nolan’s seven points on a runner, and a pair of jumpers, one from downtown, with Stasia Epler adding a trey as well, as Cambridge took a 44-17 lead into the halftime break in complete control.

The Valley needed a third period run to jump back into the game, but it never came as the Cambridge defense allowed just four points in the quarter, extending their advantage to 55-21 heading to the final frame with the decision already in hand.

Lily Phillips finished with 17 points to lead the Indians followed by McLenithan with 14, Mooney and Sophie Phillips with 11 each and Epler with 10 points as all five Cambridge starters reached double digits.

Lanoue and Jensen scored six points each to lead the Valley.

With the win Cambridge moves to 3-0 on the year and will travel to Hoosick Falls on Friday to face the Panthers.

Hoosic Valley slips to 4-2 with the loss and will look to get back on track Friday night when they host the Witches of Greenwich.

Head Coach:  Shea Bromirski

2018-19 Record:  8-14

Key Returning Players:  Brad Rowland  Ben Epler  Nick Murphy  Brian Hall  Soyer Matteson  Kaden Ogilvie

Former Cambridge standout Shea Bromirski takes the reins of the Cambridge program and will welcome back a number of returning players from last year’s team, that played competitively in the season’s second half.

” We return a lot off last year’s team,” said Bromirski.  ” We have experience and upper classmen running our show.”

Regarding the Indians identity this season Bromirski responded, ” I expect us to have great depth and the ability to play 9 or 10 guys.”  He continued, ” We have good size and will play tough physical defense.”

The Indians head coach touts, ” Hoosick Falls,” as the top contender in the Wasaren, high lighting a pair of Panther players.

” Jon Kempf has a scorer’s mentality unlike anyone in the league.  He can really shoot the ball.”

” Tristan Williams is bigger and more physically talented than anyone in the league, he can score around the rim or from deep.”

Both talented players in the competitive Wasaren as was Bromirski just a few years back. The first year head coach knows the league well and what it takes to navigate the gauntlet of the league schedule.

With an experienced and deep Indians roster, look for Cambridge to build on last season, putting themselves in the mix as tough out on a nightly basis for all league opponents this winter.

Head Coach:  Bob Phillips

2018-19 Record:  25-1

Key Returning Players:  Sophie Phillips Jr.  Lily Phillips Jr.  Fiona Mooney Jr.  McKayla McLenithan Jr.  Ruth Nolan Jr.  Stasia Epler So.

Last year the Cambridge Indians earned league, section, and state titles, in winning 25 of 26 outings and this season will return a wealth of talent  from that dominant squad.

When asked what he’s most liked about the preseason Coach Phillips replied, “The experience that comes from having so many players returning and continuing to build on that.”

As was the case in last year’s run to a state championship, Phillips sites, “Pressure defense and a fastbreak style of play,” as strengths of his group.

He pointed out the Indians, “Need to grow both as a team and as individuals,” in order to be successful this season.  Adding, “We can’t rest on past successes, and realize we’ll get everyone’s best shot.”

When asked, Phillips sited Mechanicville, Tamarac and Hoosick Falls along with his Indians as the top contenders for a Wasaren championship come February.

He hopes the phrase, “We over me,” is what spectators will associate with Cambridge after having watched them this season.

In addition to that I’m sure fans will recognize a deep, talented roster, that pushes the pace and plays the game the right way, all components that will serve Cambridge well in their defense of multiple titles from a year ago.

Stillwater Earns the Class C Crown

th_003

The Section II Class C Super Bowl brought together a pair of teams in Cambridge-Salem and Stillwater that boasted dominant rushing attacks which routinely chewed up yardage while putting plenty of points on the board.  Friday night in Lansingburgh both squads leaned on their respective ground games, and as expected, both units moved the football up and down the Burgh turf, with the two teams ending the game, nearly even in total yards.

The difference on this night was the Stillwater red zone defense, as the Warriors refused the Indians points on five trips deep into Stillwater territory fueling the 21-0 victory over Cambridge-Salem to earn the C crown.

After a scoreless first period Stillwater drew first blood on a Luc Lescault 3-yard touchdown run and with the point after the Warriors took the 7-0 lead with 9:08 remaining in the half.

On the ensuing possession, the Indians Kaedin Ogilvie broke off a 50-yard run to the Stillwater goal line but fumbled with the ball going through the back of the end zone for a Warrior touchback.

Stillwater quickly cashed the turnover in for points, when Mason Seymour galloped 69 yards for the touchdown and the Warriors held a 14-0 advantage at the 4:52 mark of the quarter.

In the final minute of the half Cambridge-Salem moved the ball inside the Stillwater 5-yard line on a Jacob Ruggles to Phil Mazzucco pass play. With only :06 remaining the Indians had time for just two plays, both turned back by the Stillwater “D”.

In the third Cambridge-Salem mounted yet another drive that moved the ball inside the Stillwater 5, but again the Warrior defense stoned the Indians stopping C-S on downs.

From there, Stillwater put together a drive of their own that ended with a 9-yard scoring run by Seymour with 9:06 remaining, giving the Warriors complete control.

On Cambridge-Salem’s final drive, the theme on the contest played out as the Indians moved the ball to the Stillwater 9 but again were stopped, this time by a Seymour interception preserving the shutout, and more importantly sealing the championship “W” for the Warriors.

Ogilvie finished the night with 130 yards on 16 carries to pace Cambridge-Salem who finishing another outstanding campaign with an 8-2 mark.

Seymour with 153 yards on 20 carries and Warriors quarterback James Galarneau with 109 yards on 22 totes led the attack for Stillwater who moves to 10-0 on the season, and advancesto regional play next weekend.
