Girls Sectional Quarterfinals; Four Wasaren Teams Advance

Six league teams played quarterfinal games in the girls Section II basketball tournament Wednesday night with action in the B and C classifications. At the end of the night four Wasaren schools posted victories, advancing to the semifinal round.

Class B

Tamarac 52 Hudson 47

Leading Scorers: Bengals – Emily Erickson 13 Jordyn Sorel 11 Alexis D’Agostino 9 Blue Hawks – Deja Beauford 14

Key Stat: In a close game throughout the top seeded Bengals took a 39-33 lead into the fourth and hung on to notch the “”W” over a determined Hudson squad. Nine players scored for Tamarac as the Bengals paraded to the free throw line attempting 33 from the stripe converting on 14. With the win Tamarac moves to the semifinal round where they’ll face Fonda at Averill Park on Tuesday at 7:30. Continue reading →

Wasaren Teams Roll on a Sectional Saturday

The Section II girls basketball tournament played its Round of 16 in the B and C classifications Saturday night with seven Wasaren teams taking the floor. Yesterday we asked the question “Could the Wasaren teams sweep?”. The answer this Sunday morning is almost. The league squads posted six “W’s” in dominant fashion, with all six handling their business on their home floor.

Class B

Tamarac 45 Broadalbin-Perth 22

Key Stat: Tamarac throws a shutout in the first period, and allows BP just eight points through three quarters, as the Bengals double up Perth and advance to a Wednesday night quarterfinal and a matchup in Clums Corners with Hudson. Continue reading →

The girls take center stage tonight in the Section II basketball tournament with a full slate of games in the Round of 16 in the B and C classifications. Seven Wasaren squads will compete and in all but one of the games they’re the higher seed playing on their home floor.

Can the Wasaren teams sweep tonight? That’s a lot to ask but here’s a quick look at why they just might.

Class C

#16 Canajoharie @ #1 Cambridge: Canjo squeaked past Spa Catholic 48-44 on Thursday in a play-in game. Congrats, your reward will be a trip to Cambridge and a demolition at the hands of the Indians who are coming off a victory in the Wasaren championship game over Tamarac. Spa Catholic Bowlers Win C-D Title

The Saratoga Catholic bowling team, competing in the Section II tournament held this week at Boulevard Bowl, staged a second half rally to claim the Class C-D sectional championship.

In a morning/afternoon format the Saints after three games sat in third place overall, but surged to the top spot in the afternoon finishing the six game block with total pins of 5624, besting Canajoharie (5504) and third place Hoosick Falls (5483).

Lansingburgh in Class B won the overall small school championship and will compete at the State Championships next month in Syracuse.

Micaela Barbolt (1179), Tim Barrett (1175), Zac Niles (1143), Hayden Day (1079), and LJ Lafiura (1053) brought home the schools first sectional bowling championship.

Congratulations to the Saints.

Wasaren Sportsnet Player of the Week

Congratulations to Hoosic Valley bowler Leigha Henkel on being named Wasaren Sportsnet Player of the Week,

At the girls bowling sectionals on February 7th, Leigha, competing as an individual, qualified for the Section II composite team that will compete at the state championship in Syracuse on March 9th.

Competing against girls from across Section II and needing a top six finish, Henkel rolled the high triple of 631, the high single of 233, and most importantly a six game total of 1180, second overall, to earn a spot on the squad of six.

Saints Fall in Class C

Leading Scorers: Canjo – Monica Hartlieb 13 Mackenzie Bowerman 12 Saints – Molly O’Reilly 11 Katie Cronin 10 Ashley Upson 10

Key Stat: The Saints led 25-24 at the half, but Canajoharie used a 13-6 third period advantage to gain the lead and held off Saratoga Catholic in the final frame for the “W” in a Class C play-in. The Saints complete their season with a 4-17 mark.

The Section II tournament will have no shortage of Wasaren teams this year as eight girls squads and nine boys teams will enter second season action, that for some begins tonight.

The strength of the Wasaren girls was rewarded as the top two seeds in both Class C and Class B went to conference teams with #1 Cambridge and #2 Hoosic Valley locking it down in the C’s and #1 Tamarac and #2 Mechanicville in the B’s.

Hoosick Falls is the #2 seed in Class C while all other Wasaren boys were given seeds #9 or above meaning opening round road games for all but the Panthers. Continue reading →

On the day that sectional bids came out the Waterford boys and Hoosick Falls girls squeezed in one more game before entering the Section II tournament.

Waterford 68 Hawthorne Valley 44

Leading Scorers: Fordians – Bobby Valigorski 17 Michael Talavera 14 Mike Castracani 11 HV – Chris Davis 26

Key Stat: The Fordians blew things wide open with a 31 point third period, and cruised to the non-league “W” on Senior Night in Waterford.

Lake George 58 Hoosick Falls 53 OT

Leading Scorers: Warriors – Graceann Bennett 36 Panthers Logan Thayne 23 Lillian Hickey 11

Key Stat: The Panthers won each of the first three quarters, but a 17-7 fourth period by the Warriors forced overtime where Bennett scored all seven Lake George points leading the Warriors to the win.

Monday night in Mechanicville the Wasaren League crowned it boys and girls basketball champions with the gentlemen from Hoosick Falls and the ladies of Cambridge earning titles. The present format has only been in play for a couple years after the realignment of the league and it provides for a special night of basketball which everyone in attendance enjoyed on Monday.
