Hoosic Valley Football Preview

The winds of change have blown through the Hoosic Valley football program this off season as a new head coach takes over and the Indians step up in class.

Last season the Valley played in the D classification, and fought their way to a class D Super Bowl appearance.  This fall the Indians move up to class C and will compete in the  C North with Cambridge-Salem, Granville, Greenwich, Hoosick Falls and Lake George.

Leading the Valley into the 2019 campaign will be first year head coach Eric Baker, a Florida native who brings 15 years of experience in the sport as a player and coach, most recently as Wide Receiver/Defensive Back coach at Watervliet.

The new coach has been quite pleased with what he’s seen in the preseason thus far.  “The kids have been very receptive to the new schemes that we’ve been putting into action” said Baker.  Those schemes are part of the new identity being put into place on both sides of the ball that Baker describes as, ” A smash mouth spread and a bend but don’t break defense.” Continue reading

Friday Roundup

While the Wasaren golf season wraps up it’s second week of play, the leagues soccer squads have begun their 2019 campaign with the girls and boys of Stillwater opening in impressive fashion.

Stillwater 2  Queensbury 1 OT:  A remarkable sidebar from the 2018 championship season for the Stillwater girls was the fact that never once trailed.  Yesterday in the championship match of the Meehan Invitational in Stillwater, a Brigid Duffy goal for the Spartans in the 56th minute put the Warriors on the wrong side of a 1-0 game.

Stillwater responded in kind, drawing even in the 65th minute on a PK by Teya Staie, and notching the win on a Paige Brinsko header in the second overtime, to turn back the Class A Spartans and win their season-opening tournament.

The Warriors move to 2-0 on the year and push their unbeaten streak to 25 games, a streak that will be tested the next time out when Stillwater will face AA opponent Colonie.

Stillwater 3  Doane Stuart 0:  A pair of goals from Grant Baker and a single strike by Issac Curtis led the Warriors to the “W” in the championship game of the Meehan Invitational on Thursday.

Tim Buchal with four saves combined with the Stillwater defense to earn the shutout as the Warriors improve to 2-0 on the young season.

Greenwich 8  Glen Falls 1: The Witches jumped out to a 5-1 lead at the break and cruised to the season-opening victory at Greenwich on Thursday.

The Witches Tess Merrill and Faith Ingber both tallied hat tricks with Cate Abate and Kiara Vasquez finding the range as well to lead the impressive Greenwich attack.
