Red Raiders Turn Back Spa Catholic

It was Senior Recognition Night in Mechanicville on Tuesday, and after a nice pregame ceremony where nearly 20 senior cheerleaders and boys and girls basketball players were showered with applause as they took a walk to mid-court with their families, it was time to run.

In four quarters of up tempo basketball, Mechanicville held a comfortable lead for much of it, then needed to hold off a late Spa Catholic spurt to post an 89-81 victory over the Saints.

The two squads put on an offensive show over the first eight minutes that opened with the Saints Jordan Catone and Mechanicville’s Josh Germain trading triples setting the stage for a competitive period with plenty of points.

Germain followed his long ball with a transition bucket and a pair free throws giving Mechanicville the early 7-3 lead.

Midway through the period Spa’s Robbie Bolen buried a trey, that the Raiders Anthony Attala quickly answered with a corner triple and a 14-10 advantage for the Raider.

At the 3:50 mark Bolen connected on his second long ball of the period followed by four points from the Saints Hayden Day, giving Spa Catholic a 19-16 lead with 2:50 remaining.

But the Raiders closed the quarter on a 10-3 run highlighted by a threes from Attala and Germain, and finished the frame with a screen and roll bucket, Devin Garland finding Tyler Dion to give Mechanicville the 26-22 cushion.

In the second period the Raider offense continued to roll with six different players scoring in the quarter.

Sophomore Tyler Eiseman dropped six points in the opening three minutes, his third bucket coming off a sweet behind the back find from Attala giving Mechanicville a 35-26 lead at the 5:10 mark.

Buckets by Dion, Attala and Luciano D’Ambro, followed by a triple from the Raiders Sean Fitzgerald gave Mechanicville control at 44-30 with 3:10 left and the home squad maintained that margin taking a 52-37 advantage into the break.

In the third the Raiders extended their lead with a mixture of transition buckets and knock down 3-pointers with five players scoring in the period led by Germain’s nine and Mechanicville took a 78-56 spread into the fourth.

Midway through the final period Germain was fouled as he drilled a fadeaway jumper and after converting the free throw Mechanicville maintained their 20 point advantage at 86-66 with 4:30 remaining.

Over the next four minutes the Raiders offense went dry while the Saints suddenly caught fire, going on a 15-2 run, fueled by a pair of triples from both Catone and Aiden Lambert, trimming the Raider cushion to 88-81 with :40 left.

But that was as close as the visitors would get, as Mechanicville closed out the final seconds to post the “W” and move to 5-0 in league play.

Hayden Day with 26 points led the Saints attack, on this night, with Catone scoring 18  and Ryan McCarroll adding 14 for the Spa Catholic squad who slip to 1-4 in Wasaren play.

Germain finished with a game-high 32 points to lead Mechanicville with Attala and Dion adding 17 and 15 points respectively.

 

 

Wasaren Sportsnet Player of the Week

redraider  Congratulations to Mechanicville girls basketball player Charli Goverski on being named the Wasaren Sportsnet Player of the Week.

On Tuesday night in a non-league loss to Cobleskill, Charli scored a game-high 20 points including her 1000th career point in front of the home crowd in Mechanicville.

One night later the senior guard dropped 18 points in the Red Raiders 48-12 league win over the visiting Panthers from Hoosick Falls.

Congratulations to Charli, our newest Wasaren Sportsnet Player of the Week.

A Look Around The League

After a Regents week where the basketball schedule was a bit lighter for most Wasaren schools, it’s back to a full slate for the upcoming week as teams enter the stretch run of the regular season.

On the girls side of things Cambridge (4-0), Mechanicville (3-0), Greenwich (3-1) and Hoosic Valley (2-2) make up the top half of the league standings.  With only one matchup between Wasaren teams counting towards the standings this year the girls will just play eight league contests.

The Indians of Cambridge at 14-0 overall continue to cruise.  Last night they put together a 45 point first quarter in their win over Berne Knox.  Incredible numbers that included eight triples in the period, and Knox, while not playing the stiffest competition this season, came in with a 10-1 mark.

On the defensive side of the ball, how about Mechanicville holding the Falls to 12 total points in the Raiders 48-12 victory Wednesday night.

Congrats to Mechanicville senior guard Charli Goverski on scoring her 1000th career point in a Tuesday night game against Cobleskill.

The Hoosic Valley girls are on a bit of a roller coaster ride lately.  In their last four league outings they had a nice win over Hoosick Falls, played well in a three point loss to Mechnaicville, then dropped a two-point decision to Spa Catholic, and on Friday night needed a big fourth quarter to post a come-from-behind win over Stillwater.

Greenwich, who’s only league loss came against Mechanicville, will face a big test this Friday night when they travel to Cambridge to take on the Indians.  The two squads met earlier in the year with Cambridge notching a 76-40 victory.

In the boys race Mechanicville (4-0), Stillwater (4-0), Hoosick Falls (3-1), Cambridge (3-1), and Waterford (2-2) make up the top five.

As always a part of those records come down to who have you played and the Red Raiders have just come off games against Hoosick Falls and Waterford with a pair of “W’s”. They’ll face Spa Catholic Tuesday night and will host Stillwater on Thursday.

Stillwater showed their defensive prowess Friday night in holding the Valley to 29 points. The Warriors at 4-0 will be tested this week with games against the Falls and Mechanicville.

Hoosick Falls bounced back after falling to the Raiders last Friday, with a comfortable win over Spa Catholic two nights ago, putting 81 points on the board with just four players hitting the scoring column.

Cambridge has played well of late and will entertain Waterford Tuesday night in what should be an interesting match up.

The Fordians with league losses to front runners Mechanicville and Hoosick Falls are a tough group that can score points in bunches on most nights.

Speaking of scoring, how about the highest scoring tandems in the Wasaren?

For boys teams it would be the Falls duo of Jon Kempf (29.8) and Tristan Williams (16.5) followed by Waterford’s Michael Talavera (23.9) and CJ Kelley (17.3).  The Witches Jesse Kuzmich (19.5) and Alex Curtis (12.7) round out the top three.

Looking for depth of scoring?

The Saints of Saratoga Catholic have five players averaging doubles.  Jordan Catone (14.1), Robbie Bolen (13.6), Anthony Barile (13.5), Ryan McCarroll (10.9), and Hayden Day (10.6) will test opponents every night at the defensive end.

As for girls scoring tandems the Phillips twins lead the way with Sophie scoring 19.0 points nightly and Lilly adding 15.2. followed by Greenwich’s Molly Brophy (21.0), and Adrianna Rojas (12.0), and the Stillwater tandem of Marley Mueller (16.7), and Molly Sheehan (10.3).

Depth of scoring is something the top two girls teams have in common.

Cambridge along with Sophie (19.0) and Lilly (15.2) adds Fiona Mooney at (9.8) and Stasia Epler at (9.5) rounding out a quartet that can put points on the board in a hurry.

Mechanicville’s deep scoring attack boasts Charli Goverski (16.1), Amy DiSiena (7.3), Jada Brown (7.3), Chloe Goverski (6.6) and AJ Joseph (6.5).

So there’s a quick look at a few things on the basketball landscape in the league with a reminder we’ll have three broadcasts this week on Wasaren Sportsnet leading off with Spa Catholic at Mechanicville in a boys run on Tuesday night.

 

 

 

Cambridge Girls, Greenwich Boys Post Wins

Leading Scorers:  Indians – Sophie Phillips 24        Stasia Epler 19         Lilly Phillips 15        BK – Taylor Meacham 17        Alexis Wright 13

Cambridge overwhelmed Berne-Knox in the first eight minutes, drilling eight triples, and ending the quarter with a 45-5 lead, cruising from there to the easy non-league “W”.

The Indians finished with 15 hits from beyond the arc, and with the victory improve to 4-0, 14-0 on the season.

 

Greenwich 65  Plattsburgh 54

Leading Scorers:  Witches –  Jesse Kuzmich 25       Alex Curtis 16          Plattsburgh – Channell 14        Oulette 11

In a Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament game, the Witches ran out to a 36-23 advantage at the half and rode the working margin from there to the comfortable win.  Greenwich bottomed eight from distance in the run, with Curtis connecting five times from deep.

A 29-4 first period gave the Witches all the cushion they would need as Greenwich cruised to the one-sided decision over the Bengals.

Hoosick Falls outscored the Saints 28-7 over the middle two frames paving the way to the easy “W” over Spa Catholic.  Thayne’s 32 point effort including three hits from beyond the arc.

Stillwater held a 31-26 advantage heading into the final period but the Indians responded with a 23-11 fourth quarter to notch the come-from-behind victory over the Warriors.  Just three players scored for Stillwater in the game, with the Valley saw just four players tally points.

 

Cambridge forfeit win over Berlin/New Lebanon

Cambridge held the Mountaineers to single digits in each of the first three quarters in posting the easy road victory over Berlin/New Lebanon, improving to 3-1 in the Wasaren.

The Saints held a slim 20-18 lead after one, but the Panthers caught and passed their hosts in the second frame taking a 42-34 lead into the break.  A 19-6 third period gave the Falls complete control and the visitors closed things out for the road win in Saratoga.

The Saints ( 2-3, 7-6), drilled 13 3-pointers in the loss, while the Panthers (3-1, 11-2), put 81 points on the board with only four players reaching the scoring column.

The Warriors hold the Valley under 30, allowing just eight points combined in the second and third periods as Stillwater with the win moves to 4-0 in league play.

The Witches needed a 15-8 fourth period to post the come-from-behind “W” over the Bengals.  The Witches held a 9-2 advantage from behind the arc in the road win.

Greenwich used a 25-17 fourth to send the game into an extra session and the Witches outscored their hosts 17-10 in the overtime period to complete the come-from-behind- “W”.  Greenwich drilled 16 triples in the contest with Curtis connecting of 10, a major part of his 39 point effort.

The Bulldogs led 24-15 at the half and used that cushion to hang on for the non-league win over the Raiders.  Goverski with 20 points led the Mechanicville attack and reached the 1000 point plateau in the contest.

The Saints played from the lead the entire game and Cronin’s five points in the final frame helped to close out the victory for Spa Catholic.

In a game that was tied 32-32 at the break, Mechanicville held the Falls to 19 points over the final two frames to earn the road “W”, snapping the Panthers 56-game winning streak in Wasaren competition.  Germain connected six times from beyond the arc, where the Raiders held an 8-3 advantage in made threes over the Falls.  The high-scoring Kempf was limited to just one field goal in the game by the Raiders defense.

The Warriors out scored their hosts 39-24 after the break, and put four players in doubles, moving to 3-0 in league play with the win.

Trailing by a point with :49 remaining Bassett drilled a go-ahead triple giving the Indians a one-point lead and the Valley hung on down the stretch, to post the home victory over the Saints.

The Witches broke open a close game with a 20-9 third period and went on the notch the road “W” over Stillwater.

After scoring just eight points in the first half and trailing 21-8 at the break the Saints stormed back with a 34 point second half, earning to come-from-behind victory over the Valley.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Cambridge Edges Tamarac

Free throws in basketball, while not as sexy as 3-pointers and dunks, more times than not play an important part in determining the game’s outcome.  The foul line, 15 feet from the rim is also known as the charity stripe, implying that free points are handed out here.

On Friday night in Cambridge there were no freebies to be found for Tamarac as the Bengals took ten second half trips to the line and came away empty, in the Indians exciting 39-37 victory.

Cambridge’s Ben Epler scored the first five points of the game on a deuce and a triple, to which Bengals sophomore guard Zachary Rice answered in kind with a long three, followed by a steal and score, knotting things at 5-5 just 2:30 into the first.

Rice connected on another long ball with :45 left in the period for a 8-7 Tamarac lead, but at the buzzer the Indians Brian Hall got a floater to go off a nice spin move giving Cambridge the 9-8 edge.

Two minutes into the second frame. a bucket and one by the Bengals’ Dalton Maxon started a 11-3 Tamarac run, that included a Joey Poulin triple and three points from Rocco DiCarlo, that sent the teams to the halftime break with the Bengals holding a 21-14 advantage.

The third quarter belonged to the Indians and Jeffery Burke.  The junior forward scored 12 points in the period that started with an old fashioned three point play at the 7:00 mark, followed by a runner, a trey from the top, a put back, and a transition bucket with 1:20 remaining off a sweet find from Kaedin Ogilvie and Cambridge closed the frame with a 33-28 cushion.

Early in the fourth Burke drilled an elbow jumper giving the Indians their biggest lead of the night at 36-28, but Tamarac wouldn’t go quietly.

Midway through the period the Bengals used an inside score by Maxon, a Jacob Barbera drive and a Miles Ednie put back to close to within 36-34 at the 3:00 mark.

Down the stretch points were hard to come by for both squads.

With :18 left Brad Rowland converted on 1 of 2 from the line giving the Indians a four point cushion at 38-34.

After a Tamarac timeout Rice buried a triple from the top with :05 remaining, and the Bengals gave the foul sending Roland back to the line with three ticks left.  The senior guard hit the first, missed the second but Tamarac was unable to get a shot off and the Indians walked away with the well-earned “W”.

Just two players reached double figures in scoring on the night with the Bengals’ Rice scoring 11 points pacing Tamarac (1-2, 2-10),  while Burke led all scorers with 16 points to lead Cambridge (2-1, 3-6).
