Bengals, Panthers Earn Wasaren Titles

The Tamarac girls and Hoosick Falls boys were crowned Wasaren champions Sunday night at Skidmore College, winners in the inaugural Wasaren League championships.

Under the new format, first place teams from the Hudson and Battenkill divisions squared off to determine a league champion and at night’s end Tamarac claimed a 61-51 decision over Cambridge, while Hoosick Falls bested Saratoga Catholic 80-41.

Crossover Friday

Wasaren teams squared off with each other one last time Friday night in crossover games under the league’s new format.  Teams from the Battenkill division faced teams from the Hudson in a final run before sectional play.

Sunday at Skidmore College the championship for the girls and boys will be decided with Cambridge facing Tamarac at 6:30 in the girls game, and Hoosick Falls taking on Saratoga Catholic at 8:00 in the boys tip.

Red Raiders Defeat Cohoes

Freshman Devin Garland poured in 19 points, including five triples, to lead Mechanicville past Cohoes in a nonleague matchup Thursday night.

Nick Billert scored 16 points for the Raiders who ran out to a 40-25 advantage at the break, on their way to the comfortable victory over the Tigers.

With the win Mechanicville improves to 10-7 on the season and returns to action tonight when they host Fordians of Waterford in a Wasaren crossover game.

Wasaren Sportsnet Player of the Week

spa catholic logoCongratulations to Saratoga Catholic’s Terel Tillman on being named Wasaren Sportsnet Player of the Week.

Last Tuesday Tillman scored 20 points including five 3-pointers in a 69-44 victory over Waterford.  On Friday Terel poured in 28 points, drilling six treys, in a 92-58 win over the Mountaineers of Berlin.

On the year Terel is averaging 11.0 points per game for the 16-3 Saratoga Catholic squad.

Congratulations to Terel, this week’s Wasaren Player of the Week.

Mechanicville Rolls Over Berlin

To say that Berlin’s first season as a member of the Wasaren league has been difficult would be accurate and terribly understated.  The Mountaineers boys basketball team made a stop in Mechanicville Thursday night on their gauntlet run through the conference, and while the venue was new the results were all too familiar.

Mechanicville led from start to finish, bottomed 10 triples and put 10 players in the scoring column as they rolled over Berlin and posted a 75-50 decision.   Continue reading
