When Saturday’s game between the Witches of Greenwich and the Indians of Hoosic Valley kicks off, it will have the feel of a Class C Super Bowl. In fact it will be one of two semifinals being played on Saturday afternoon, the other being Mechanicville at Voorheesville. With all due respect to the Blackbirds and the Red Raiders, who are an excellent squad and my dark horse pick of the four remaining teams, the Valley/Witches get together seems like the main event. The Greenwich girls cross country team, perennially a dominant force breezed to the team title in the Wasaren cross country championships on Tuesday at Saratoga Spa State Park. Five of the first six girls to cross the finish line were Witches as Greenwich ran away from the field. Continue reading

The forecast for Saturday’s Class C quarterfinal football game between Holy Trinity and Hoosic Valley called for rain and wind in the air, with a heavy dose of the Valley running game on the ground. Mother Nature delivered as did the Indians, who rushed for nearly 450 yards on a rain soaked field in posting the 46-12 victory over the Pride. Continue reading


A pair of sectional football games, and two girls soccer matches highlighted a sectional Friday for Wasaren schools as Mechanicville and Greenwich posted gridiron wins, while Tamarac and Hoosick Falls got it done on the pitch. Continue reading

Class C quarterfinals were played on Thursday in the Class C boys soccer sectionals and three Wasaren teams earned “W’s”, advancing to the semifinal round.
Mechanicville 3 Bishop Gibbons 2: Jeff Luce scored a hat trick for the Red Raiders, two coming after intermission, and Mechanicville posted the come from behind victory over Gibbons.
Luce connected on his first goal in the first half of play giving Mechanicville a 1-0 lead at the break.
Michael Gosh and Will Lawson found the range after halftime to give Gibbons the 2-1 lead, but Luce tied things, finishing on a Reggie McCann find, and won it later in the half rifling home the unassisted game winner.
#8 Mechanicville advances to play at #1 Maple Hill on Saturday.
Stillwater 2 Schoharie 0: The Warriors got first half goals from Brody Cepiel and Cooper Monost and made them stand, in posting the win over Schoharie.
#3 Stillwater will host #6 Galway on Saturday at 5 p.m.
Cambridge 3 Berlin 2: Trailing 2-1 at the half the Indians scored a pair of second half goals one each from Patrick Robertson and Ian Montomery to notch the come from behind “W” over Berlin.
#7 Cambridge advances to play at #2 Mayfield on Saturday.
Galway 2 Waterford 0: Galway’s Adam Mancini scored just one minute in, and teammate Jake Restivo added another later in the half to lead Galway to the win over the Fordians.
Keeper Devin Pierre saved 17 shots for Waterford who end their season at 9-8.
