Another name for the foul line in basketball is the “charity stripe”, misnamed because there’s nothing given to any player that steps to the line for shots.  However Friday night in Mechanicville, Tamarac made it appear that free points were handed to anyone wearing a red jersey, shooting a basketball from 15 feet.

The Bengals converted on 23 of 25 attempts from the line, and used that precision to keep a comfortable working margin in their 69-54 defeat of the Red Raiders. Continue reading

Lady Raiders Roll Over Warriors

In a game played Wednesday night, the Mechanicville girls ability to score the ball was on full display as the Red Raiders rolled to a 76-42 victory over neighboring Stillwater.

The Warriors held a 18-16 advantage after the first period, but over the next two quarters Mechanicville put 48 points on the board including a 29 point effort in the second. Continue reading

Wasaren Sportsnet Player of the Week

cambridge pictureCongratulations to Cambridge basketball player Sophie Phillips for being named Wasaren Sportsnet Player of the Week, our first selection of the winter season.

In three games last week Phillips scored eight points in a 55-22 win over Hoosick Falls, poured in 25 points in a 61-53 victory over Cooperstown, and dropped 10 points in the championship game of the Delaware Academy Tip-Off Tournament as Cambridge earned the title with a 40-28 decision over the host squad.

Phillips along with Helen Mooney was named to the All Tournament Team.

Congratulations to Sophie, our newest Wasaren Sportsnet Player of the Week.

Cambridge Captures Tourney Championship

The Cambridge girls took to the road over the weekend to play in the Delaware Academy Tip-Off Tournament and they made their return trip home with the championship hardware.

In game one they bested Cooperstown 61-53, outscoring Cooperstown 29-21over the second half in a game that was deadlocked at the break.

Sophie Phillips scored a game-high 25 points to lead the Indians while Grace Snyder added 10 points and Lilly Phillips nine for Cambridge. Continue reading

Key Stat:  Mechanicville knocked back 10 triples to Cambridge’s three, but the Indians converted 14 of 26 from the foul line while the Raiders were 3 of 8.

Summary:  Mechanicville out scored the Indians in three of the four quarters but a 17-5 second period gave Cambridge enough cushion to come away with the win. Continue reading

Hoosic Valley Stops Greenwich

The Indians of Hoosic Valley used balanced scoring and their trademark man-man defense to take control early and cruised to the 47-25 victory over the visiting Witches from Greenwich.

The visitors led just once in the contest scoring the opening bucket before the Indians went on a 10-0 run over the remainder of the period with Renee Serafin’s four points leading the way. Continue reading

Mechanicville Tops The Valley

In a nice early season girls basketball matchup the Red Raiders defensive pressure proved to be the difference turning Hoosic Valley over throughout, paving the way for the 54-40 victory Wednesday night in Mechanicville.

With a good crowd on hand the two squads treated the fans to a fast paced first period. Raider guard Sammy Pasinella got things started, drilling a three from the top for half of her six points in the quarter. Continue reading
