A pair of league squads were in action on Thursday night with the Greenwich boys and Stillwater girls taking the floor in non-league runs.  The Warriors came away with a “W” while the Witches dropped a close decision.

Stillwater 54  North Warren 30:  After a tight first period of play, the Warriors opened things over the next two quarters outscoring North Warren 29-8 on their way to the comfortable win. Continue reading

Girls Basketball; Greenwich Tops Gibbons

Greenwich built a working margin over the middle periods and hung on for the 52-49 victory over Bishop Gibbons on Wednesday night in Greenwich.

The Witches trailed 16-13 after the first 8:00, but outscored Gibbons 25-13 in quarters two and three on their way to the season opening “W”.

The Witches Molly Brophy led all scorers with a 20 point effort, while Emma Brophy added 10 points for Greenwich.

Bishop Gibbons placed three players in double digits with Ava Megyeri scoring 13 points, Abby Kienzie 11, and Jailene Santiago with 10 points for the 1-1 Gibbons squad.

Wasaren Sportsnet’s Basketball Webcast Schedule

Here is the tentative schedule of basketball webcasts that Wasaren Sportsnet will broadcast this year.  Many thanks to Mechanicville and Hoosic Valley for allowing me to broadcast from their venues.

Witches Top Corinth

Greenwich hosted Corinth Monday night in their season-opener and came away with a 47-40 victory over the Tomahawks in a close contest throughout.

John Walsh led the Witches with 14 points and Josh James added 10 points for Greenwich who led 13-11 at the quarter and 25-20 at the half, and rode that cushion to the nonleague “W”.

 

Cambridge Class D Champion

A much anticipated matchup for the Class D crown turned into a one-sided affair as Cambridge jumped out early, and cruised past Greenwich 40-7 to earn the Section II championship for the 16th time since 1992.

After these two squads met in the regular season and played a back and forth contest with the Witches prevailing 43-38, most felt Saturday’s game would be much of the same.  Didn’t happen. Continue reading

Greenwich, Cambridge Advance to Class D Super Bowl

Was there ever a doubt?  Starting in the preseason and continuing through the last weekend in October the prevailing theme in Section II Class D football was either Greenwich or Cambridge would wear the crown on the first Saturday in November.

Yesterday both squads cleared their last hurdle with blowout victories in respective Class D semifinals, setting up the much anticipated Super Bowl matchup. Continue reading

High School Football; Cambridge, Greenwich Romp, Valley Wins Close

Cambridge 62  Granville 6:  Cambridge rolled behind a powerful ground game that racked up 316 yards with eight rushing touchdowns by seven different players.

Tommy English scored twice for the Indians as did Kaedin Ogilvie, and Helen Mooney made eight of nine extra points eclipsing 100 points for her career.   Continue reading

Boys Soccer; Raiders Cruise Past Panthers

Mechanicville 7  Hoosick Falls 0:  The Red Raiders score early and often, ringing the bell five times before the break in posting the shutout victory over the Falls.

Jeff Luce, Chris Ciccarelli and Michael Cavotta all found the range twice and Kevin Charette added a single strike for the 12-0-1 Mechanicville squad.   Continue reading
