cambridge07After winning back to back state championships in Class D the Cambridge football team, with additional players from Salem, moves to Class C competition and while their competition on Saturday was a Class D squad, I think the Indians will fare well in their new classification.

Flashing a stable of backs that can take it the distance at any time, running behind a strong, experienced O-line the Indians cruised past Hoosic Valley 41-7 in Cambridge on Saturday. Continue reading

Friday Morning Roundup

Boys and girls soccer along with a pair of golf matches played out on Thursday in the Wasaren as all sports ramp up with football kicking off this weekend.

Boys Soccer

Stillwater 5  Waterford 4 OT:  The Warriors Grant Baker scored a hat trick before the break, and saved the game-winner for the overtime period, as Stillwater got past the Fordians of Waterford.

Josh Luca added a first half score for the Warriors, while Waterford connected on a Hunter Guertin PK and a strike from Jack O’Brien off a corner as the teams went to halftime with Stillwater holding a 4-2 advantage.

Second half goals from Tyler Galanearu and Zach Soden knotted things at 4-4 setting up Bakers game-winner in the extra session.

With the win Stillwater improves to 1-0, 3-0 while Waterford goes to 0-1, 0-1 with the tough loss. Continue reading

Golf Results: Hoosick Falls Moves to 4-0

While it’s still early in the high school golf season, every match, whether played in August or late September, counts the same in the race for the league title. That being said, the Panthers of Hoosick Falls have enjoyed the best start to the Wasaren season sporting a perfect 4-0 mark with a win on Thursday over the Fordians of Waterford.

Here’s a closer look at how all the matches played out across the Wasaren.

Hoosick Falls 4.5  Waterford .5:  The Falls Ryan Bloomer carded the low round of 38, and the Panthers posted wins in flights 1-4 in action at Fairways of Halfmoon on Thursday.

Matt Smith, Miles Smith and Brady Hathaway all joined Bloomer in the winner’s circle as Hoosick Falls improved to 4-0 on the year. Continue reading

Wasaren Golf

Greenwich 5  Cambridge 0:  In a match played at the Battenkill Country Club it was all Greenwich as the Witches posted the shutout over Cambridge.

Mason Williamson fired a 36 to claim the medalist honors and lead Greenwich to the win.  Reed Boduch, Jake Owen, Tyler Zeihm, and Grant Peck all joined Williamson in the winner’s circle for the Witches who improve to 1-1 in the early going. Continue reading

Wasaren Golf: Panthers Win Twice

It’s hard to believe with the start of school three weeks away, that the fall season for high school athletics in underway.  The golf schedule as always leads us into the new year and over the past two days most of the league’s golf teams have competed in match play.

Here’s a look at how things played out as the 2018 edition of Wasaren athletics tees off.

Saratoga Catholic 3  Greenwich 2:  Terel Tillman carded a 38 to take medalist honors and lead the Saints to the narrow victory over the Witches in a match played at the Battenkill Country Club. Continue reading

Eleven Wasaren teams stepped on the field Monday as the Section II baseball and softball tournaments begin a week that will end with champions being crowned in every classification.

Leading Hitters:  Witches – Gabby Wiss 2B      Courtney Fraher 2B

Greenwich Girls, Stillwater Boys Earn Wasaren Crowns

The Greenwich girls dominated the distance events and the Stillwater boys showed dominance across the boards as the Witches and Warriors captured titles in the Wasaren League championships on Wednesday in Stillwater.

Greenwich with 162 points, Stillwater with 149 points and Hoosic Valley with 104 points were the top three teams in the girls meet.

Double winners for the girls included Mechanicville’s Jada Brown, 100 and 200, Stillwater’s Madison Krochina, shot put and discus, Hoosic Valley’s Lauren Reed, long jump and triple jump, and the Stillwater relay teams in the 400 and 1600.

Stillwater with 149 points, Hoosic Valley with 89 points and Waterford with 65 points were the top three in the boys competition.

Multiple winners included Stillwater’s Joe Conti, 100 and 200, Greenwich’s Michael Gabriel shot put and discus, Stillwater’s Dylan Morin, long jump and triple jump, Greenwich’s Peyton Howard, 800 and 1600, and the Stillwater relay teams in the 400, 1600, and 3200.

Leading Hitters:  Saints – Dylan Custer 1B, RBI

In a pitcher’s duel between Spa Catholic’s Terel Tillman and the Witches Christian O’Brien the Saints pushed across single runs in the second and seventh innings, more than enough offense to support Tillman’s one-hit gem, as Saratoga Catholic earns the Wasaren championship.    Continue reading

Tamarac Clinches Hudson Division

In what was a good race for the softball crown in the Hudson division of the Wasaren, the Bengals of Tamarac earned the title with a 6-3 victory over Greenwich on Monday afternoon.
