Watching Mechanicville defeat Catholic Central Tuesday night in their season-opener I came away thinking there’s a lot to like about this basketball team.

To start, four key players return for head coach Rian Richardson in senior Nick Billert, junior Josh Germaine, and sophomores Devin Garland and Luciano D’Ambro.  They bring a variety of skill sets to the floor every night. Continue reading

Mechanicville Bowlers Post Win over Corinth

After winning the bowling championship last year in the Colonial Council Mechanicville was told they wouldn’t be allowed to compete this year in the Colonial.  No problem.

On Monday the Mechanicville squad picked up where they left off posting a dominant win over Corinth as part of the Wasaren Division in the Adirondack League.

The Raiders held a 3686 – 2375 in total pins over the Tomahawks in the match at Hometown Lanes.

Leading the way for Mechanicville was junior captain Jacob LaFountain with games of 226 277 214 for a 714 triple.   Senior captain Joshua Kalwasinski fired a 690 triple with games of 175 259 and 256.

Sophomore Glenn Prarie added a 643 triple and sophomore Carmen Morizio  with a 494 triple all equaled a 4-0 match win for the Raiders.

According to the old adage “It’s not how you start, but how you finish that matters”.  Well Tuesday night in Mechanicville the homestanding Red Raiders started fast and finished strong in posting a 66-50 victory over the Catholic Central Crusaders in the season-opener for both squads.

Junior Josh Germain buried a triple on Mechanicville’s first possession starting a 9-1 run that saw that Raiders scored the first four times they touched the ball.  Continue reading

Friday Night Hoops

A handful of Wasaren squads stepped on the floor Friday night as the new season got underway with non-league runs that saw the Mechanicville girls and the Saratoga Catholic boys post season opening “W’s”.

Girls

Mechanicville 64  Watervliet 53

Leading Scorers:  Red Raiders – Charli Goverski 29     Jada Brown 8        Cannoneers – Madison Soroka 15

Key Stat:  The Raiders built a 47-32 lead through three quarters and closed things out over the final eight minutes to notch the comfortable victory.

Take Away:  Goverski hands the Cannoneers 29 and Mechanicville hangs 64 on the board, a lot of points for the Raiders on a rare night when they didn’t connect one time from deep. Continue reading

Warriors, Valley Advance

The Section II soccer tournament continued it’s march to the finals on Wednesday and five Wasaren schools were in action trying to extend their playoff runs.

Stillwater 4  Maple Hill 0:  The Warriors took control early, scoring four times before the break in turning back the Hilltoppers in a Class C quarterfinal.

Brooke Pickett scored yet another hat trick, Paige Brinsko added a single goal, and Kiersten Conroy saved two shots to earn the save as Stillwater moves onto a C semifinal in Lansingburgh on Saturday where they’ll face the Indians of Hoosic Valley.  Continue reading

Soccer Sectional Results

A big Saturday in Sectional soccer action saw Wasaren teams fare well led by Mechanicville who posted wins in both girls and boys matches.

Girls

Mechanicville 1  Catskill 0:  After a scoreless first half, Nevaeh D’Alioa, off a Jada Brown find, found the back of the net for the matches only goal lifting the Red Raiders to the win, and a Class B semifinal game on Tuesday against Holy Names in Lansingburgh.

 

Stillwater 9  Granville 0:  Teya Staie and Brooke Pickett both scored hat tricks, and Keelyn Peacock, Devon Wagner and Gianna Moraci added single goals as the top seeded Class C team in the state moves on to host Maple Hill in a quarterfinal match on Tuesday. Continue reading

Friday Night Football

Five Wasaren schools played football Friday night with two squads facing opponents in Section II quarterfinals while three competed in crossover contests.

Hoosick Falls 18  Lake George/Hadley Luzerne 6:  Trailing 6-0 after the first period, the Panthers shutout the Warriors the rest of the way and notched the come-from-behind win in a Class C quarterfinal.

Jeffrey Vincent ran for 210 yards and caught touchdowns passes of 18 and 38 yards from Panther quarterback Sam Richard, to lead the Falls attack.

With the win the Panthers move to 7-1 on the season and will play in a Class C semifinal next weekend. Continue reading
