Mechanicville Boys Basketball Preview

Head Coach:  Rian Richardson

2018-19 Record:  12-10

Key Returning Players:  Anthony Atalla  Josh Germaine  Luci D’Ambro  Devin Garland  Tyler Dion

A year ago Mechanicville flashed the ability to play with anyone, and with plenty of returning talent from that squad, hopes run high in Raider Nation this season.

Coach Richardson likes what he’s seen thus far from his group.  “Our practices have been so competitive that each individual has improved which makes our team better each day. Each player brings a little something different to our team in a positive way.”

Richardson highlighted his squads work ethic, ” We’ve worked really hard early, starting back with our open gyms in April.”

The head coach touts the Raiders speed and quickness as strengths that, “Will help us defend and create mismatches offensively” and “Our experience, which should also be beneficial.”

As for keys to Mechanicville’s success this season Richardson pointed to teamwork.

“We will need to play as a team and share the ball to be successful.  Guys are currently learning their roles and if everyone buys in we will be competitive.”

Regarding his thoughts on contenders for the league crown Richardson offered, “We hope to be at the top when the season ends and we realize it won’t be easy.  Hoosick Falls returns five starters that lost in the Class C final last year.”

The Mechanicville mentor concluded by saying he wants, “People to say that we play the game the right way.”

Look for that, as well as a run at the Wasaren title from these Raiders, this season.

With all Section II tournaments moving closer to crowning classification champions, the girls volleyball tournament will play it’s semifinal matches on Tuesday with the Bengals of Tamarac very much in the mix.

In the opening round of the Class C tournament, while #2 Tamarac received a bye, #12 Hoosic Valley and # 7 Mechanicville drew first round opponents, and both squads posted straight set”W’s” to advance, with the Valley eliminating #5 Greenville and the Raiders turning back #10 Chatham.

In the quarterfinals Hoosic Valley fell 3-2 to the Blackbirds of Voorheesville, and in an all-Wasaren match, Tamarac slipped past Mechanicville 3-2.

In a pair of semifinal matches on Tuesday, with the top four seeds having all advanced, it plays out in Gloversville with #1 Lake George vs. #4 Voorheesville at 5 p.m. and #2 Tamarac taking on #3 Fonda in the nightcap at 7 p.m.

The Class C championship match is scheduled for Friday at 5 p.m. at Saratoga High School.

Schuylerville Tops Red Raiders

Sixth-seeded Schuylerville, behind goals from Liam Armstrong and Zach Saddlemire slipped past the second-seeded Red Raiders of Mechanicville in a Class C boys soccer semifinal at Mohonasen on Wednesday.

The Black Horses took a 1-0 lead about five minutes in on a deflected shot by Armstrong that found the side net for the only score of the first half.

Early in the second half the Raiders just missed on scoring opportunities, hitting the cross bar on a pair of shots and then misfiring on a penalty kick.

The game score stood until Saddlemire’s scoring strike late in the second half sending Schuylerville to the championship game where they’ll face top-seeded Ichabod Crane on Saturday at Colonie.

Mechanicville wraps up a fine season earning the Wasaren title and finishing with a 14-5 overall mark.

Girls Soccer; Raiders, Warriors Advance

soccer-ball1

The Section II soccer tournament continued to eliminate pretenders from contenders on Tuesday with quarterfinal action in Class C while semifinals were played in the B classification.

Class B

Mechanicville 2  Holy Names 1:  Trailing 1-0 at the break, Mechanicville connected on a pair of second half strikes to post the come-from -behind “W” over Holy Names and advance to the Class B championship match on Friday at Lansingburgh.

A first half tally by Ava Panto gave Holy Names the early 1-0 nothing advantage that they took to the half.

But after intermission the Raiders answered with Jada Brown connecting on the equalizer and a minute later finding the back of the net for the eventual game-winner.

Raider keeper Savannah Bowie (12 saves) and the Mechanicville defense pitched the second half shutout as the Raiders move on and will face to top-seeded Schalmont in the title match at the Burgh on Friday with a 4:30 kickoff.

Class C

Stillwater 7  Chatham 1:   The Warriors scored five times in the first half and rolled to the victory over Chatham in a Class C quarterfinal in Stillwater.

Brooke Pickett scored four goals, with Devon Wagner, Tyan Staie and Paige Brinsko all adding single strikes for the top-seeded Stillwater squad.

Caroline Paolucci tallied in the second half for Chatham.

With the win Stillwater advances to the semifinals on Monday at Mechanicville where they’ll take on the fourth-seeded Warriors of Lake George in a 6:30 kickoff.

Lake George 4  Cambridge 1:  Trailing 1-0 early, Lake George evened the match before the break and scored three unanswered after halftime in posting the quarterfinal victory over the Indians.

Lily Gates connected at the 17:20 mark of the first half giving Cambridge the early advantage.

A Gabby Marchello strike at the 32:28 mark pulled the Warriors even and the teams went to intermission tied 1-1.

Early in the second half Rachel Jaeger found the range to give Lake George the 2-1 lead and midway through, Kylie Mann connected for the 3-1 advantage.

At the 68:43 mark Marchello added her second tally of the match, and the Warriors closed things out, advancing to the semi’s and date with top-seeded Stillwater on Monday.

Cambridge ends a fine season at 7-2 in Wasaren play and 12-5 overall.

Football, Soccer Sectional Outlook

With the Section II tournaments entering their second week of play in football and girls and boys soccer, let’s take a look at how many Wasaren teams are continuing to compete for a sectional championship.

In the Class C football tourney things played out as we talked about on this site last week with all four Wasaren schools advancing to the semifinal round this weekend.

The top two seeds in Stillwater and Cambridge-Salem handled their business as expected, the Warriors posting a 46-16 “W” over eighth-seeded Granville, and Indians turning back seventh-seeded Voorheesville 36-4.

The other two league squads came away with upset victories, at least on paper, with fourth-seeded Greenwich dominating #5 Fonda 45-7, and the sixth-seeded Bengals of Tamarac topping #3 Watervliet 28-16.

Semifinal weekend shakes out with #1 Stillwater hosting #4 Greenwich on Friday night and #2 Cambridge-Salem will entertain #6 Tamarac on Saturday afternoon.

The Friday night game should be a dandy.  Can Greenwich come into Stillwater and knock off the undefeated Warriors?  They could as the Witches after a week one loss to Cambridge-Salem are playing as well as anyone in Class C. Continue reading
