Wasaren Sportsnet Player of the Week

Congratulations to Tamarac basketball player Frank Zotto on being named this week’s Wasaren Sportsnet Player of the Week.

The senior guard scored 17 points on Wednesday in a 78 -58 victory over Waterford and  on Friday night by poured in 29 points to lead the Bengals to a 75-71 win over Greenwich.

On the year Zotto is averaging 22.0 points per game for the 4-0 Tamarac squad.

Congratulations to Frank, our newest Wasaren Sportsnet Player of the Week.

A full slate of boys action played out on Wednesday night with a pair of one-sided affairs and two games that were decided late.

Leading Scorers:  Panthers – Tristan Williams 20      Jon Kempf 13      Brennan Andrew 11 Red Raiders – Josh Germain 19

Key Stat:  The Panthers outscored Mechanicville 35-19 over the middle two periods and survived a fourth quarter comeback by the Raiders to earn the “W”. Continue reading

Friday night saw the Wasaren in full swing with a full schedule of boys and girls action where close contests were few and far between.

Leading Scorers:  Panthers – Logan Thayne 15       Lillian Hickey 13                 Mountaineers – Kaley Culberston 5

Key Stat:  Eleven Panthers score in the one-sided victory as the Falls moves to 3-0 with the win.

Tamarac Wins Season-Opener

Leading Scorers:  Bengals – Bo Catherwoood 27      Frank Zotto 23          Maginn – Kurtis McMullen 25      Treylan Cortina 23

Key Stat:  The Bengals who trailed 35-30 at the  break, used a 24-13 final period to post the come-from-behind “W” in a high scoring affair.

Take Away:  Catherwood and Zotto combine for 50 points to lead a potent Bengal attack that will get their Wasaren season underway on Friday night when they’ll host the Indians of Cambridge.

Section II Girls Soccer All-Stars

Soccer players from the Wasaren were well represented on Sunday at the girls Section II soccer banquet with a number of league players recognized as Section II all-stars.

In Class C Stillwater’s Brooke Pickett was named Player of the Year and Stillwater head coach Christine Ihnatolya  was named co-coach of the C classification.

Joining Pickett on the all-star squad were teammates Teya Staie, Devon Wagner and Keelyn Peacock, Sami Dickinson (Hoosic Valley), Vanessa Evans (Cambridge), Annnelise Rebel (Waterford) and Josie Ryan (Hoosick Falls).

In Class B Savannah Bowie (Mechanicville) earned Goalkeeper of the Year while her teammates Jada Brown and Ryleigh Hopeck , along with Isabella Bisceglia (Tamarac)  were selected to the Class B team.

Monday Night Buckets

A pair of Wasaren teams were in action on Monday with the Tamarac girls and the Stillwater boys taking the floor in non-league contests.

Tamarac 66  Mohonasen 62

Leading Scorers:  Bengals – Emily Erickson 29      Lizzie Machnick 14          Mohon – Breanna Lott 23     Kateri Vumbaco 19     Megan Hart 11

Key Stat:  Tied after three periods of play Tamarac used an 18-14 advantage in the fourth to turn back a tough Mohan squad and notch the season-opening “W”.

Take Away:  Opening night for many teams is a challenge offensively.  Not the case here as Tamarac puts 66 on the board against a good opponent with Erickson handing Mohon 29, leading eight Bengal players in the scoring column.  Now a 10 day wait before their next run, an away get together with the Indians of Cambridge. Tamarac Boys Basketball Preview

In our first installment of team previews for basketball teams of the Wasaren we’ll start in Clums Corners with a look at the Tamarac boys under head coach Eric Medved.

Medved, who had a successful run with the girls program in Tamarac a few years back, takes the rein of a boys team that is showing signs and fueling optimism in the Corners.

The Bengals will put a gritty, athletic squad on the floor and use that athleticism to showcase their strengths.

A trio of returning players in sophomore guard Bo Catherwood, senior forward Ryan Derby and senior guard Frank Zotto give Tamarac an experienced nucleus.
