Tomorrow night in Mechanicville the Red Raiders welcome their neighboring rival the Stillwater Warriors for a boys basketball run that will temporarily decide who resides on top of the Wasaren standings.
Both squads enter undefeated in league play, and while no championships are won with four weeks left in the regular season, it’s still a sweet match-up for early January.
The Red Raiders come in at 6-0, 9-1 winners of nine straight. They average 50.6 per contest and allow 47.2 defensively. The Raiders shoot 66.5% from the free throw line, and have hit 48 times from behind the arc.
Their top three scorers are Evan Dunn 18.6, C.J.Tironi 11.2, and Giovanni D’Ambro at 10.2. Another starter for head coach Rian Richardson is Jacob Henes who adds six points a night and his athleticism to both ends of the floor.
After being tagged with a season opening loss to Cohoes, Mechanicville has lived in the win column with four of those “W’s” by three points or less.
The Warriors and head coach Dave Cook bring a mark of 6-0, 10-2 to the floor Friday evening. They score 65.4 nightly, and give up 52.8 at the defensive end. Stillwater shoots 63.7 from the line and have bottomed 80 triples on the year.
Mitchel Wayand at 26.6, Jared D’Aloia 14.9, and Zack Travis at 12.8 points lead the potent Warriors attack that put 87 on the board their last time out against Tamarac.
Stillwater won their first nine contests of the season, suffered back to back losses to Schuylerville and Cohoes, before getting back on track Tuesday night in their 87-54 win over the Bengals.
Both squads are athletic and can run the floor for points, or set up and create open looks for their scorers. They both played primarily zone defensively the night I saw them but that can always change.
Mechanicville allows the fewest points per game of all the Wasaren teams, Stillwater owns the Wasaren’s most prolific offense.
It should be a good run Friday night in Mechanicville, where I’m sure both schools fan base will be in full voice. No trophies will be handed out at game’s end, but if you’re a fan of the sport you should check this one out.
