It was Homecoming, Friday night in Mechanicville but Christmas came in the third period for the Red Raiders with gifts in the form of Lake George turnovers that Mechanicville used to take control in their 33-16 victory over the War Eagles.
In front of packed house on a beautiful September evening the first quarter was dominated by the defensive units of both squads with little movement of the football.
Late in the period Dan Motta returned a punt 67 yards setting Mechanicville up with a first and goal from the seven, and with :46 remaining in the quarter Keegan McHale took it in from there and the 6-0 Red Raider lead.
Mechanicville extended their cushion to 12-0 when Motta found Kyle Scott in the right corner of the end zone for a five yard throw and catch with 4:49 left in the half.
On their final series before the break, the War Eagles put points on the board with Jimmy Kelleher scoring on a five-yard TD run and Clay Moody adding the two point conversion trimming the lead to 12-8 as the teams headed to intermission.
In the third a pair of Lake George turnovers swung momentum and ultimately the contest to the Raiders.
Midway through the period after War Eagles quarterback Michael Johnson found tight end Chris Becker for a nice gain, the ball was ripped away from Becker and three plays later Evan Chapman powered in from 12 yards out and with the McHale two point conversion Mechanicville led 20-8.
Later in the period after a Motta interception, it was Chapman again using a spin move to score on a nine yard run to give the Raiders a 26-8 advantage with 1:10 left in the third.
With 7:33 remaining Motta threw his second touchdown pass of the night hooking up with Ryan Robbins on a 11-yard strike and all that was left was a War Eagles score on a 1-yard Moody run as Raider Nation celebrated their fourth victory in as many outings with a fireworks display in the end zone.
Undefeated with Homecoming, Christmas and the Fourth of July on display, quite a Friday night in Mechanicville.
