It’s crossover weekend in the Wasaren where teams from the Hudson and Battenkill divisions play opponents with the same order of finish from the opposing division culminating with Championship Monday in Mechanicville where Cambridge and Tamarac will compete for the girls title, with Hoosick Falls and Waterford vying for the boys crown.
Here’s a quick look at the crossovers matchups.
Girls
Berlin / Greenwich: The Witches won by 71 points in the two teams regular season meeting and it wouldn’t surprise if this get-together has a similar ending.
Saratoga Catholic / Hoosick Falls: The Saints average 28 points per contest, while Hoosick Falls leading scorer Logan Thayne averages 24 points nightly. The Panthers should have no problem here.
Hoosic Valley / Mechanicville: In the best matchup of the night the second place teams in their respective divisions square off in Mechanicville. The two squads split a pair of games 10 days apart back in December with the Valley posting a 60-48 “W” in the first meeting and the Raiders returning the favor with a 46-33 decision in the second run. The Indians come in, winners in five of their last six, while Mechanicville is 4-2 over it’s last six outings. The Raiders have more firepower but the Valley, as always, can guard. The team with the fewest turnovers wins this game.
Boys
Stillwater / Spa Catholic: The Warriors are playing their best basketball of the year right now, going 4-2 over their last six. Spa Catholic comes in having dropped their last four league games. Stillwater posted a 46-35 victory over the Saints in early January, the margin could be bigger this time.
Berlin / Greenwich: The Witches wrapped their regular season with blowout wins over Tamarac and Spa Catholic, games in which Greenwich knocked down a combined 26 triples, with eight different players joining the long ball party. This one will be another easy “W” for the Witches with the only question being how many threes will Greenwich bottom.
Cambridge / Mechanicville: Cambridge comes in having split their last four games, while the Raiders dropped decisions in three straight to finish the regular season. Mechanicville prevailed 73-58, four weeks ago when the two teams met, and while the Indians are playing better, they can’t match the Raiders ability to score the ball.
Tamarac / Hoosic Valley: On paper this looks to be an easy “W” for Tamarac. The Bengals score 68 points nightly with four players averaging doubles, while the Valley lives in the mid-40’s at the offensive end. But just two weeks ago the Indians gave Tamarac all they wanted before the Bengals closed out a 56-49 win. Since then Tamarac has dropped three of four, while the Valley won it’s last three league runs. The boys from Schaghticoke can guard, not allowing an opponent to reach 60 points all season, and they’ll need to lean on their defense if they hope to post the upset in this one.
