Cambridge Punches Ticket To Final Four

I’ve only seen the Cambridge girls play twice this season and that’s one game more than I needed to realize this was the best Class C squad I’d seen in quite a while. Why? They can beat you like a drum in multiple ways.

The Indians can guard, and turn you over which ignites their lethal transition game.  They have knock down shooters, and a strong inside game. If that’s not enough they’re well coached and maybe most importantly they have great team chemistry.

I didn’t make the trip Saturday to Canton but by all accounts Cambridge showed all the things that make them, well Cambridge, in rolling over Madrid-Waddington 60-36 in the Class C regional final at SUNY Potsdam.

Cambridge led 14-12 after the first, and then went to work on the defensive end turning over Madrid-Waddington time and again, sparking a 16-0 run, and the Indians never looked back.

By the break the Indians had doubled up M-W at 32-16 and started the third period on an 11-0 streak leaving no doubt about their final four appearance next weekend at HVCC where Cambridge will face Millbrook in a 10 a.m. tip.

Sophie Phillips led the Indians in scoring with 17 points while Hellen Mooney added 15, and Bridey Nolan dropped 12 points drilling four triples.

With the win Cambridge improves to 25-1 on the season and now preps for a state semifinal, looking to unleash their multifaceted game two more times this final four weekend in Troy.

 

 

 

Cambridge Marches On

Typically in post season play as a team continues to advance the games become more competitive.  The Cambridge Indians’ journey to a Section II title followed the script with a pair of blowout wins in the first two rounds, a closer semifinal game with Hoosick Falls and an overtime victory in the championship contest over Mekeel Christian.

Thursday night facing Seton Catholic in a regional semifinal, the Indians went “off script”.  While needing extra minutes to decide things in their last run, Cambridge put this one away by halftime racing out to a 44-18 lead at the break and coasting to the 75-50 victory over the Knights. Cambridge Enters Regional Play

The Wasaren league again this year boasted quality teams on both the girls and boys side of things.  Entering sectional play a handful of squads had legitimate chances of earning a Section II crown.  But after two weeks of post season runs just one league team is still standing, the girls of Cambridge.

The best Class C team I saw all season worked their way through the Section II tournament with wins over Cairo-Durham, Maple Hill, Hoosick Falls in the semi’s and in the finals topped Mekeel Christian in overtime.    Continue reading →

Panthers and Bengals Fall in Finals

Key Points:  In a game tied 47-47 midway through the final period, Lake George closed the contest with a 14-2 run to claim the Section II Class C boys title.  With the win the Warriors improve to 24-0 on the year and will move on to regional play, while Hoosick Falls finishes a fine season at 19-5. Cambridge Class C Champions

To win a Section II title you need a deep, talented roster, a quality coaching staff, some luck along the way, and sometimes extra minutes to earn the crown.

The Cambridge Indians are skilled, well coached and I’m sure at times this year have been lucky.  With checks in the first three boxes, they checked the fourth on Saturday at HVCC needing an extra session to decide things, posting a 62-59 decision over Mekeel Christian to claim the Class C crown.   Continue reading →

Panthers Move to the Finals, Lake George Top’s Spa Catholic

Thursday was semifinal night for the Class C boys at the Cool Insuring Arena with  league schools in both halves of the doubleheader.  Hoosick Falls and Saratoga Catholic came in looking to post “W’s” and setup an all Wasaren final on Saturday.

But the Warriors of Lake George weren’t buying in, as the number one Class C team in the state rolled to an 82-46 decision over Spa Catholic in the opening game of the evening.

In the nightcap Hoosick Falls took control early and held off a determined Maple Hill squad down the stretch, posting a 68-59 victory to advance to the Class C title game.

Tamarac Advances, Raiders Fall

Tamarac and Mechanicville stepped on the floor in Averill Park Wednesday night in separate semifinal runs, one win away from the girls Class B title game.  In a perfect basketball world an all Wasaren final would play out Saturday afternoon at Hudson Valley Community College.

But life isn’t Hollywood and while Tamarac punched their ticket to the championship game with a convincing 55-40 victory over Schalmont, Mechanicville’s opponent Voorheesville had other ideas pinning a 54-37 defeat on the Raiders in game one. Continue reading →

Cambridge Moves on to the Finals

“It’s hard to beat a good team three times in the same season” is a well used line in the sports world, and that was the task at hand for Cambridge in their Class C semifinal matchup with Hoosick Falls at Cohoes Tuesday night. That old adage proved true as the Panthers gave Cambridge all they could handle before the Indians closed the deal with a 49-42 victory sending them to the Class C finals Friday at 6 p.m. at Hudson Valley Community College.

Holding a 16-8 lead after the first period the top seeded Indians saw the Panthers respond with a 19-5 second quarter and take a 27-21 advantage into the break.

Cambridge turned up it’s defensive intensity in the third, holding the Falls to six points, while offensively the Indians flashed their transition prowess fueling an 18 point quarter, and held a 39-33 cushion heading to the final frame.

Hoosick Falls drew as close as 43-41 late, but Cambridge knocked down clutch free throws to seal the hard fought “W” advancing to the title game and a meeting with #2 Mekeel Christian on Friday night.

Helen Mooney led Cambridge, (22-1), offensively with 19 points, while Logan Thayne scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Panthers who finish their season at 12-11.

Over the years the league known as the Wasaren has undergone a number of changes. Until the early 70’s the league was recognized as the Washington County League. Six present day schools remain in the Wasaren from that era including Cambridge, Greenwich, Hoosick Falls, Hoosic Valley, Stillwater and Tamarac. Continue reading →
