The Panthers of Hoosick Falls entered Tuesday night’s game with Greenwich on a two game losing skid, Connor McCart and Alex Mendez made sure it didn’t stretch to three. The Falls Mr. Inside and Outside combined for 49 points in the Panthers 63-35 victory over the Witches.
The McCart, Mendez tandem offensively, coupled with the aggressive man to man Panther “D” made things miserable for the visitors from Greenwich although things stayed competitive through the first two periods of play.
After a slow start by both teams a drive for two by Mendez at the 6:35 mark broke the ice.
After a Greenwich bucket, Remington Hickey got to the paint and scored off glass giving the Falls the 4-2 lead.
Greenwich’s Bailey Winch followed with a wing three at the 4:15 mark giving the Witches their only lead of the night at 5-4.
The Panthers responded with seven straight on a pair of Mendez free throws, followed by a Mendez three and a Hickey jumper for an 11-5 advantage.
Mendez added a layup off a nice back cut, and a pull up in the lane to finish with 11 points in the period, staking the Falls to a 17-11 lead after one.
McCart took over in the second stanza scoring the first seven Panther points on an up and under, a corner three and an inside bucket at the 4:20 mark pushing the lead to 24-13.
Brendan Stout buried a wing three for Greenwich, and after a pair of Mendez free throws and a deuce in the paint from McCart, the Witches went on an 8-2 run.
A George Ostrowski put back, a Carson Mosher transition three, followed by a three from Collin Skiff trimmed the Panther lead to 30-24 with 1:14 left in the half.
McCart answered with a pair of buckets to finish the frame giving him 13 points for the quarter and the Falls a 34-24 advantage at intermission.
Hoosick Falls came out in the third and hit the Witches with an 8-0 run from which they never recovered.
A Mendez baseline jumper, a Kellan Skott triple from the top, followed by a Mendez steal and score, and a McCart free throw forced a Greenwich timeout with three minutes gone in the period.
The Panthers out scored Greenwich 12-7 over the remainder of the quarter led by McCart’s seven points and the 54-31 cushion for the Falls after three gave way to plenty of run for both teams reserves in the final eight minutes.
McCart and Mendez finished the night with 27 and 22 points respectively for the 4-2, 4-4 Panthers.
For Greenwich, who struggled all night offensively, Ostrowski with nine points paced the attack, as the Witches with the loss fall to 1-4, 2-7 on the year.
