As the Section II Basketball Tournament enters it’s championship weekend, just one Wasaren team remains in contention for a sectional title. The Hoosick Falls girls, as hot as anyone left in the tournament, face the Indians from Glens Falls on Saturday at 12:45 at Hudson Valley Community College.
The Panthers enter at 22-1, winners in 20 of their last 21 games. They score 52 points per night, allow 35 defensively, have made 71 three pointers this season, and convert on 61.5% of their free throws.
The Falls is led in scoring by senior forward Megan Flynn at 14.2 points nightly, and junior forward Kelly Pine at 13.4 points per. Junior guard Lizza Ryan has posted double figures in nine games this season, and scored a game-high 25 points in the Panthers sectional win over Stillwater.
Glens Falls, from the Foothills Council comes in with a 17-3 mark on the season. The Indians average 50 points per contest, allow 39.5 defensively, have made 73 triples, and shoot 51.2 % from the charity stripe.
Freshman Lucy Tougas scores it at 17.7 points per, while her junior sister Sophie adds 13.3 points to the Glens Falls attack. Caitlyn Hogan provides a long ball threat for the Indians with 33 makes from behind the arc this year.
The Panthers take the floor Saturday, fresh off their 54-45 semifinal win over Voorheesville where a 23-6 second period fueled the victory.
Glens Falls punched their finals ticket with a 39-28 “W” over Hoosic Valley in a grind it out affair that saw the Indians score 20 of their 39 points from the free throw line.
Two quality squads who’s numbers show little separation between them. Look for a game close throughout, and decided late. While both teams boast a pair of double figure scorers, in a game like this a third scorer usually emerges for the winning squad. Could it be the Panthers Ryan, or the Indians Hogan that get’s it going?
I’ve not seen Glens Falls play this year, but did see the Panthers in action and was impressed with what I saw. I like Hoosick Falls close tomorrow, to claim the Class B crown.
