It’s hard to believe the high school football schedule enters it’s fourth weekend of play this Friday night. The midpoint of the regular season is upon us and it seems to have come quickly this year as summer weather’s extended stay has given September an August feel.
In Class C four football teams carry perfect 3-0 marks into the fray this weekend, and when the sun rises on Saturday morning that number will be cut in half as a pair of undefeated contests play out Friday night when Greenwich entertains the Indians of Hoosic Valley and Watervliet travels to Mechanicville to take on the Red Raiders.
In the Class C North matchup at Greenwich both the Witches and Indians come in having rolled over their three opponents thus far. Both squads like to run the football but can selectively hurt you through the air as well.
Hoosic Valley has run for over 1000 yards on the season and are led by the senior running back tandem of Tom Madigan and Isaac Sanchez. Madigan has rushed for 442 yards on just 34 carries while leading Section II in scoring with 74 points. Sanchez has carried for 271 yards with a pair of running and receiving touchdowns to date.
Senior quarterback Mike Schoonmaker rarely puts the ball in the air but the Valley signal caller has been productive when asked to do so, hitting on 6 of 7 attempts for 143 yards and three scores.
Greenwich enters with over 900 yards gained on the ground and are led in that department by running back Reese Cristaldi. The junior back has rushed for 608 yards and six touchdowns including a 324 yard day last week versus Fonda.
Junior receiver Cole Burgess has over 200 receiving yards, and 100 more rushing with seven TD’s on the year, while quarterback Josh Jones has been effective in limited attempts, connecting on 12 of 22 for 283 yards and six touchdowns.
In Mechanicville the Red Raiders and the Canoneers have a long and storied rivalry and Friday nights contest should add to that legacy.
V’liet likes to run the football and has done so for nearly 1000 yards through three contests. Sophomore back Ravion Burt with 377 yards and seven scores, and senior back Colin O’Brien with 338 yards and a pair of TD’s lead the Canoneer attack.
Senior QB Jared Ellis has thrown for 147 yards and three scores for Watervliet who on the season has scored a pair of defensive touchdowns to go with three scores in their return game.
Mechanicville fresh off their come from behind win over Holy Trinity last weekend, brings a balanced offensive attack.
Senior Marc DeBates has run for 368 yards and five touchdowns, while backfield teammate Evan Chapman has carried for 308 yards including a 181 yard afternoon against Holy Trinity.
Raider signal caller Dan Motta has rushed for over 200 yards, but can also throw it passing for just under 300 yards and five scores on the year.
Two great matchups under the lights on Friday, and neither should disappoint.
