The high school basketball season is by far the longest of the fall, winter and spring sports. Starting in early November, most teams play into late February or March. No matter if a team’s enjoying a great season or struggling throughout, a basketball year is a marathon.
But unlike a marathon there’s no clear finish line as squads compete in sectional play, and if fortunate beyond, knowing that a loss ends their year.
Three Wasaren teams fought their way into sectional finals, played over the weekend, and this Sunday morning there are no more games to play. The Hoosic Valley girls fell on Friday night, and on Saturday the Tamarac girls and Stillwater boys did as well ending outstanding years for all three schools.
So as the book closes on the 2017 basketball season here’s a closer look at the final two runs for league teams this year.
Glens Falls 50 Tamarac 38
Leading Scorers: Indians – Sophie Tougas 25 Lucy Tougas 13 Bengals – Hannah Kreiger 12 Emily Erickson 11
Key Point: Glens Falls used a 14-5 second period to take a 30-19 lead into the half. Late in the third Tamarac closed the gap to 33-28 on back-to-back threes from Emily Erickson and Hannah Kreiger, but the Falls answered with a 14-0 run to take control on their way to the “W”.
Lake George 69 Stillwater 54
Leading Scorers: Lake George – Caleb Scrime 26 Alex Jones 17 Stillwater – Zack Travis 15 Ezra Echeandea 13 Jared D’Aloia 12
Key Point: With Lake George leading by as many as 17 points in the third period, Stillwater closed to within 50-43 late in the quarter, but Lake George’s Mason Flatley drilled a triple to end the frame, and the Warriors were money from the foul line over the final eight minutes converting 11 0f 12 to seal the victory.
