With much attention focused on the upcoming Super Bowl weekend where three Wasaren schools will compete for titles, tonight Section II champions in girls soccer will be crowned and in Class C the Warriors of Stillwater will face Schoharie with all the chips pushed to the center of the table.
Stillwater enters tonight’s 7:00 kickoff in Lansingburgh with a 17-2 mark. They’ve scored 85 goals on the year while allowing 18. The Warriors have shutout opponents seven times this season, two coming in sectional play with a 4-0 victory over Chatham and a 5-0 decision over Bolton. Add to those “W’s” a 5-1 win over Lake George in the semifinals and the Warriors have out scored opponents in the second season 14-1.
Offensively Stillwater is led by Brooke Pickett with 40 goals and nine assists, while Teya Staie has found the net 15 times to go with seven assists. Keeper Kiersten Conroy has a save percentage of 89% on the campaign.
Schoharie enters play with a perfect 18-0 record. The Indians have scored 122 goals and allowed opponents just 10 goals in return. Schoharie started the season posting five straight shutouts and have 11 in all. Their sectional victories include a 6-1 win over Waterford, a 7-1 decision over Cambridge, and a narrow 4-3 “W” over Hoosick Falls in their semifinal.
Sisters Carrie and Katie Krohn lead the potent Schoharie attack with Carrie finishing on 39 goals this year while Katie has found the range 38 times. Between the posts Keeper Abby Wetzel has turned back 88% of opponents shots on the season.
Should be a good one tonight in the Burgh and despite Schoharie’s high powered attack and unbeaten status, I like the Warriors of Stillwater to win it close, and wear the Class C crown.
