When Mechanicville and Hoosick Falls stepped on the floor Saturday afternoon both squads were coming off Friday night runs and the question was how fresh would the teams be for the 1:30 tip?
While both teams had plenty in the tank the Red Raiders used their quickness defensively and in transition to post a 55-44 victory over the visitors from Hoosick Falls.
After Mechanicville jumped out to a 5-0 lead to start things the Panthers gained traction, catching and passing the Raiders midway though the first.
Sophomore center Logan Thanye scored six points and senior forward Noreen McAuliffe added five in the period that ended with the Panthers holding a 15-10 lead.
An Eliza Whitman elbow jumper, followed by a Thayne bucket to start the second, extended the Falls advantage to 19-10 but from there the Raiders went to work.
Mechanicville put together a 15-3 run to finish the half highlighted by a pair of Taylor Grayson triples, two buckets from freshman Amy DiSiena, and a sweet finish at the rim off a spin move by Sammy Pasinella to take a 25-22 lead heading into the break.
In the third Thayne’s eight points kept the Panthers within reach, but the Raiders behind Pasinella’s eight points, and five points from Charli Goverski on a trey and a transition bucket stretched the lead to 43-35 heading to the fourth.
A Thayne free throw at the 5:49 mark pulled the Falls within six at 45-39 but that was as close as the Panthers would get the rest of the way.
Goverski, Pasinella and sophomore Jada Brown all scored four points over the final period with Brown closing it out on a scintillating coast to coast foray at the 1:00 mark as Mechanicville secured the well earned victory.
Thayne with 21 points and Whitman with 11 points led Hoosick Falls who slip to 8-5 in league play with the loss.
Pasinella scored 19 points, with Brown adding 13 and Goverski 11 for the Raiders who improve to 8-6, 11-6 on the season with the win.
