Wasaren Teams Fare Well in Sectional Play

Fourteen Wasaren squads stepped on the floor Tuesday night as the Section II basketball tournament shifted into high gear.  Seven league teams on both the girls and boys side of things competed in the B and C classifications.

At night’s end three boys teams advanced with wins, while six of the seven Wasaren girls squads posted victories.

Girls

Cambridge 56  Cairo-Durham 23

Leading Scorers:  Indians – Sophie Phillips 16     Lily Phillips 15        Cairo-Durham – Mikaela Phillips 8

Key Points:  The Indians led 28-10 at the break and put things away with a 20 point third, cruising past Cairo in Class C action.

Next Up:  #1 Cambridge hosts #9 Maple Hill on Friday.

 

Maple Hill 49  Greenwich 42

Leading Scorers:  Hilltoppers – Lori Chittenden 12      Witches – Molly Brophy – 15

Key Points:  The Hilltoppers held an 8-1 advantage from deep, and outscored Greenwich 26-19 over the second half in a Class C game that was tied at intermission.

 

Hoosick Falls 66  Duanesburg 41

Leading Scorers:  Panthers – Logan Thayne 22      Eliza Whitman 17      Duanesburg – Maddie Meyer 10

Key Points:  A 17-3 first period set the tone, as the Falls advances with a convincing win in Class C play.

Next Up:  #5 Hoosick Falls takes on #13 Stillwater on Friday.

 

Stillwater 48  Berne-Knox 30

Leading Scorers:  Warriors – Marley Mueller 18     Julia McLaughlin 11     Brooke Pickett 11      Berne Knox- Taylor Meacham 14

Key Points:  The Warriors led 24-23 at the half, but held Berne-Knox to six points the rest of the way in notching the upset in Class C.

Next Up:  #13 Stillwater plays #5 Hoosick Falls on Friday.

 

Hoosic Valley 54  Middleburgh 45

Leading Scorers:  Valley – Renee Serafin 16      Sam Lanoue 12       Middleburgh – Bre Palmatier 11     Kelsy Terrell 10

Key Points:  The Indians won each of the first three quarters building a 42-25 lead on their way to the “W” in Class C action.

Next Up: #7 Hoosic Valley will play #2 Mekeel Christian on Friday.

 

Tamarac 65  Emma Willard 40

Leading Scorers:  Bengals – Emily Erickson 14      Emma Willard – Molly Zahnleuter 11

Key Points:  Tamarac jumped out to a 22-8 advantage after one and cruised to the victory in Class B, putting 10 players in the scoring column.

Next Up:  #1 Tamarac will host #8 Glens Falls on Saturday.

 

Mechanicville 63  Fonda 39

Leading Scorers:  Red Raiders – Sammy Pasinella 20     Jad Brown 17     Charli Goverski 16  Fonda – Carly Atty 13     Abigail Lombardoni 10

Key Points:  Trailing 12-8 after the first eight minutes, the Raiders put 55 points on the board over the final three periods in posting the “W” in Class B play.

Next Up:  #2 Mechanicville will host #7 Hudson on Friday.

 

Boys

Saratoga Catholic 54  Duanesburg 51

Leading Scorers:  Saints – Tim Barrett 13     Aiden Dagostino 10      Duanesburg – Ben Lenehan 16

Key Points:  Dagostino buried back to back triples with under a minute left, to give the Saints the lead, and sealed it with a layup at the :09 mark as Spa Catholic advances with the narrow victory in Class C.

Next  Up:  #4 Saratoga Catholic plays #5 Granville at Shenendehowa on Friday.

 

Stillwater 50  Greenwich 47

Leading Scorers:  Warriors – Brian McNeil 15     Cooper Monast 15      Witches – Carson Mosher 17

Key Points:  Trailing 38-36 entering the fourth frame Stillwater outscored their hosts 14-9 over the final eight minutes to earn the victory in Class C.

Next Up:  #9 Stillwater plays #1 Lake George at Hudson Valley on Friday.

 

Maple Hill 70  Cambridge 41

Leading Scorers:  Hilltoppers – Nick Butler 19     Nate Mannion 12     Evan Kulpa 11     Indians – Tristan Woodworth 16     Brenden Holcomb 12

Key Points:  The Indians led 33-29 at the break but Maple Hill gained control with a 26-5 third period on their way to the victory in Class C action.

 

Hoosick Falls 65  Hadley Luzerne 36

Leading Scorers: Panthers – Jon Kempf 24      Evan McCart 17        Hadley Luzerne – Connor Backus 9

Key Points:  The Falls won every quarter in posting the easy win in Class C.

Glens Falls 84  Tamarac 38

Leading Scorers:  Falls – Joe Girard III 46     Trent Girard 11      Bengals – Matt Morrow 14

Key Points:  Glens Falls led 53-21 at the half in cruising to the victory.
