Stillwater Warriors Football Preview

stillwater warriorThe Stillwater Warriors coming off an excellent 2018 season where they compiled a 7-2 mark, will look to build on that this fall and will do so with a talented and experienced roster.

When head coach Ian Godfrey was asked about team leadership he responded simply, “The senior class.”  He does so with good reason.

Three of those seniors in quarterback James Galarneau, and running backs Mason Seymour and Luc Lescault lead an explosive, offensive attack that can score in bunches.

They’ll do so behind an experienced O-line led by seniors Brian McNeil, Justyn Kovalsky and Max Helms alongside junior Rhett Mercier and freshman Cody Hagadorn.

Defensively Seymour, Lescault, McNeil and Mercier make up a strong, athletic linebacker group that is vital in the Warriors 3-4 defensive alignment

Godfrey also said the Warriors will have “a few underclassmen who will have the opportunity to play significant varsity minutes”, highlighting sophomore Caleb Dyer who is, ” Coming back from a season-ending injury a year ago and will play a big part on both sides of the ball.”

Coach Godfrey has liked what he’s seen in the preseason from his squad.  “Our team has worked extremely hard and continue to push each other in practice.  As a staff we are pleased with our kids work ethic and ability to pick up so quickly on the schemes.”

When asked about his team’s identity and what they must do for a successful season the head coach said “Defensively we’ll look to stop the run and take the ball away”, while offensively, ” Continue to move the ball and put points on the board.”

Godfrey sited the need to, “Stay healthy”, he continued, “The success of our program relies on the health and eligibility of our athletes.”

Regarding top contenders in both the conference and the section Godfrey pointed to Cambridge-Salem as, “The defending champ and the team to beat” and come sectional time “seeds 1-8, are all capable of winning a Class C title.”

Stillwater will play their season-opener on the road in Voorheesville next Saturday taking on the Blackbirds in a 1:00 kickoff.

A deep, talented, hard working roster, led by an experienced senior class has all the makings of what Warrior Nation hopes will be, a special football season on the turf in Stillwater this fall.
