Talk to any football coach long enough and at some point when discussing keys to success they’ll reference limiting turnovers and playing well in all three phases of the game. More times than not teams will need to do both to earn a victory and on Friday night in Mechanicville turnovers and special teams played a big part in Canajoharie/Ft. Plains 28-20 “W” over Mechanicville.
After a three and out by Canajoharie to start the game, the Red Raiders put points on the board in their initial drive when senior kicker Jake LaFountain connected on a 27 yard field goal at the 5:45 mark, capping a series highlighted by a 40-yard run from junior quarterback Luciano D’Ambro.
After the Mechanicville defense held the Cougars to another three and out, the Raiders took over on their own 46 yard line and immediately went to work. Rolling right, D’Ambro found Mason Angiano for a 46 yard throw and catch down to the Cougar eight. Continue reading

The Waterford girls soccer team opened the 2019 season in dominant fashion with a 9-0 shutout of Corinth on Thursday.
Sophia Belonga and Cassidy McClement with a pair of goals each led the Fordians attack.
Izzy Vecchio, Mackenzie Koniszewski, Addy Galuski, Ellis Trubridge and Madison Roy all added scoring strikes for Waterford who held a 6-0 advantage at the break.
Mechanicville 5 Waterford 0: In action at Fairways of Halfmoon on Thursday, Mechanicville’s Anthony Fiacco found the course to his liking, firing the low round of 40 in leading the Red Raiders to the sweep of Waterford. Continue reading

Greenwich 4 Doane Stuart 3: AJ Rymph with two goals, and Charlie Gartner and Tommy Abate with single strikes led the Witches past Doane Stuart on Thursday.
Greenwich gained some breathing room when Gartner and Abate both found the range in the first ten minutes of the second half to open up a game that was tied 1-1 at the break. Continue reading

In 2018 the Panthers of Hoosick Falls put together yet another winning season in their long history of football success. The Falls went 4-1 in the Class C North and 7-2 overall and will look to do more of the same this year.
Longtime head coach Ron Jones highlighted four players as key returning starters for this year’s edition of Hoosick Falls. Seniors Dmitri Rose OT/LB, Max Kipp QB/LB, Liam McGarvin HB/LB and junior Josh Colegrove will all provide two-way leadership for the Panthers this fall.

Last season the Bengals of Tamarac played to a 5-4 overall record while going 1-4 in the very competitive Class C Central. This fall Tamarac will look to improve on their conference mark, a conference with the departure of Holy Trinity that will have five teams this year in Mechanicville, Stillwater, Fonda and Canajoharie/Ft. Plain along with Tamarac.
Four important two-way players return for the Bengals this year in RJ Doyal LT/NT, Jonah Rescott RB/DE, Sean Pusatere LG/DE, and Peyton Nealon RB/LB. Doyal, Rescott and Pusatere are part of 14 seniors that will dress for head coach Eric Roadcap this season.
Another senior player has been the surprise of the preseason in Tamarac as Tristan Nemjo QB/K/P, will strap on the pads this year for the first time. Nemjo, heading to Hobart College next year to play baseball, “Has shown us how much of a D1 athlete he is with the game of football”, said Roadcap. Continue reading

Brooke Pickett with three goals and Keelyn Peacock with a goal and two assists led the Stillwater attack, as the Warriors posted the comfortable “W” over Class AA opponent Colonie on the Stillwater turf Tuesday night.
Peacock got things started for the Warriors, connecting on an unassisted strike just four minutes in, and six minutes later in was Pickett finding the range off a Peacock find giving Stillwater the 2-0 cushion which they took into intermission.
Pickett’s second goal came at the 58:00 mark, again off a Peacock feed, and she completed the hat trick on an unassisted tally with 15:00 remaining in the match.
The Stillwater defense and keeper Kiersten Conroy ( 6 saves ), combined for the shutout, as the Warriors notch their third straight victory to start the season.

The winds of change have blown through the Hoosic Valley football program this off season as a new head coach takes over and the Indians step up in class.
Last season the Valley played in the D classification, and fought their way to a class D Super Bowl appearance. This fall the Indians move up to class C and will compete in the C North with Cambridge-Salem, Granville, Greenwich, Hoosick Falls and Lake George.
Leading the Valley into the 2019 campaign will be first year head coach Eric Baker, a Florida native who brings 15 years of experience in the sport as a player and coach, most recently as Wide Receiver/Defensive Back coach at Watervliet.
The new coach has been quite pleased with what he’s seen in the preseason thus far. “The kids have been very receptive to the new schemes that we’ve been putting into action” said Baker. Those schemes are part of the new identity being put into place on both sides of the ball that Baker describes as, ” A smash mouth spread and a bend but don’t break defense.” Continue reading

The Witches Charlie Gartner scored a hat trick leading Greenwich past Glens Falls 4-1 in a season-opener for both teams on Saturday.
Glens Falls broke on top, just four minutes into the match on a Cyrus Guillet goal, but :20 later Gartner found the range off an AJ Rymph find to even the score at 1-1.
Liam Niesz gave Greenwich the lead on an unassisted strike at the 32:00 mark and the Witches took the 2-1 advantage to the break.
Gartner’s second and third goals came early in the second half giving the Witches complete control as Greenwich keeper Andres Gonzalez ( 5 saves ), and the Witches defense closed things out for the home “W”.
