th1 On the same day Cambridge earns a state championship in football the high school basketball season got underway with a handful of girls and boys squads from the Wasaren taking the floor in nonleague runs.

Girls

Mechanicville 62  Watervliet 53:  Mechanicville eased out to a 36-25 halftime advantage and went on to post the comfortable victory over the Cannoneers of Watervliet.

Sammy Pasinella showed the way for the Red Raiders scoring a game-high 25 points and Jada Brown added 12 for Mechanicville who bottomed seven triples in the contest and converted on 9 of 13 from the foul line.

Madison Soroka and Sheila Caminiti both netted 12 points in the contest for V’liet.

 

Hoosic Valley 46  Cohoes 39:  The Indians broke on top with a 15-7 first quarter lead and rode that cushion to the “W” over Cohoes.

Lauren Paul with 16 points and nine rebounds and Renee Serafin with 15 points, nine boards and six assists led the Valley attack.

The signature Hoosic Valley defense did it’s job as well holding the Tigers to single digits in each of the first three periods.

 

Boys

Stillwater 55  Bishop Maginn 46:  The Warriors out scored the visitors from Maginn 36-23 after the break to notch the come-from-behind victory in the season opener for both teams.

Brian McNeil led all scorers with 23 points while teammate Connor Monast added 15 points to pace Stillwater offensively.

High School Football; Cambridge, Greenwich Romp, Valley Wins Close

Cambridge 62  Granville 6:  Cambridge rolled behind a powerful ground game that racked up 316 yards with eight rushing touchdowns by seven different players.

Tommy English scored twice for the Indians as did Kaedin Ogilvie, and Helen Mooney made eight of nine extra points eclipsing 100 points for her career.   Continue reading

Saturday Football; Cambridge Wins Big

Cambridge 63 Helderberg Valley 3:  Cambridge scored six touchdowns in the first 12 minutes of play in rolling over Helderberg Valley.

Brenden Holcomb was on the receiving end of three touchdown passes from Zack Rowland covering 52, 37 and 12 yards, and Jonas Butz and Colton Dean added rushing scores for Cambridge, all coming in the first period.  Max Hofer returned an interception 30 yards for a touchdown to cap the first quarter assault as the Indians with yet another dominant victory improve to 6-1 on the season. Girls Soccer; Raiders Turn Back the Panthers

Mechanicville 7  Hoosick Falls 1:  The Red Raiders took control with four first half strikes in notching the victory over the Panthers to complete an unbeaten regular season.

Jada Brown scored a hat trick, with Brynn Murphy and Mackenzie Bowie adding a pair of goals each for the 14-0-1 Wasaren Champions.  Continue reading

Hoosic Valley Runs Over Rensselaer

In the first three weekends of the high school football season the schedule makers were unkind to the Indians of Hoosic Valley.  Playing  Greenwich, Cambridge and Whitehall to start the campaign, the Valley, while at times showing signs, stumbled to an 0-3 mark.

But facing less than a “Murderer’s Row” over the remaining weeks of the schedule the winds have shifted in Schaghticoke as the Indians posted their second straight dominant victory on Saturday with a 49-7 decision over the Rams from Rensselaer. Continue reading

Hoosick Falls 33  Fonda 13:  The Panthers scored 20 unanswered after the break to post the victory over Fonda.

Hoosick Falls quarterback Sam Richard rushed for 60 yards, threw for 101 and scored three touchdowns to lead the Falls.  Panther running back Max Kipp gained 101 yards on the ground with a score as the Falls improve to 4-1 on the season with the win. Continue reading
