Five Wasaren schools played football Friday night with two squads facing opponents in Section II quarterfinals while three competed in crossover contests.

Hoosick Falls 18  Lake George/Hadley Luzerne 6:  Trailing 6-0 after the first period, the Panthers shutout the Warriors the rest of the way and notched the come-from-behind win in a Class C quarterfinal.

Jeffrey Vincent ran for 210 yards and caught touchdowns passes of 18 and 38 yards from Panther quarterback Sam Richard, to lead the Falls attack.

With the win the Panthers move to 7-1 on the season and will play in a Class C semifinal next weekend. Continue reading →

The Section II soccer tournament continued play on Thursday for both the girls and boys with seven Wasaren teams in action.

Girls

Mechanicville 1  Albany Academy 0:  Jada Brown took a feed from Michalena DePasquale and found the back of the net for the matches only goal, as the Red Raiders advance to round two with the 1-0 “W”.

Savannah Bowie saved nine shots and combined with the Mechanicville defense for the shutout.  Next up for the Raiders is a home match on Saturday with Catskill. Continue reading →

Wasaren Sportsnet Player of the Week

Congratulations to Stillwater soccer player Brooke Pickett on being named Wasaren Sportsnet Player of the Week.

On Tuesday in Cambridge Pickett scored all three Stillwater goals in a 3-0 decision over the Indians and followed that with a four goal effort on Saturday in the Wasaren championship game leading the Warriors to a 4-1 victory over Hoosic Valley.

The junior striker leads all of Section II in goals scored with 35 including nine games with three or more goals.

Congratulations to Brooke, our newest Wasaren Sporstnet Player of the Week.

Stillwater Girls Earn League Title

The Wasaren girls regular season wrapped up on Saturday in Mechanicville with a full day of crossover games and the championship match between Stillwater and Hoosic Valley.

Stillwater 4  Hoosic Valley 1:  The Warriors complete an undefeated regular season by capturing the Wasaren title with the win over Hoosic Valley.

Brooke Pickett connected on all four goals to lead the Warriors who with the win move to 15-0-1 and now prepare for a deep post season run.

Casey Bugbee scored the lone goal for the Indians who wrap the regular season at 11-4-1 and will be a tough out in the upcoming Section II tournament. Continue reading →

Hoosick Falls 45  Corinth 8:  Panther running backs Jeff Vincent and Josh Colegrove both ran for three scores as the Falls cruised past the Tomahawks.

Vincent scored on runs of 8, 74, and 45 yards highlighting a 212 yard effort, while Colegrove added 103 rushing yards for a Panther ground game that totaled 341 yards in the contest.

With the win Hoosick Falls improves to 6-1 and will enter sectional play next weekend. Continue reading →

Boys Soccer

The regular season for boys soccer wrapped up on Wednesday and the Red Raiders of Mechanicville picked up win number 13 to finish undefeated in league play.  Mechanicville sits atop the Hudson division in the Wasaren and will face off for the league title with the Battenkill division winner, Waterford, on Saturday.

Mechanicville 6  Stillwater 2:  The Red Raiders improve to 11-0 in league play with the victory over Stillwater in the 8th annual Indian Cup match.

Jeff Luce and Chris Ciccarelli with two goals each, and Zach Rapaccioulo and Brandt St.Gelais with single strikes led the Mechanicville attack.

Both ends of the spectrum played out Friday night for Wasaren football teams as Stillwater and Cambridge-Salem stay posted easy “W’s” to stay unbeaten, while the Witches of Greenwich, also in dominant fashion, notched their first win if the season.

Stillwater 3  Mechanicville 3:  The Warriors jumped out to a 2-0 advantage at the half but the Red Raiders stormed back after the break with three goals to force the tie.

Brooke Pickett connected on two first half strikes, and added a third goal after intermission to lead the Stillwater attack.

Ryleigh Hopeck tallied a pair of second half goals for Mechanicville with Jada Brown’s goal, late in the half knotting the match at 3-3.

Mechanicville 10  Berlin 0:  The Red Raiders rang the bell five times in each half to post the shutout victory over the Mountaineers.

Jeff Luce scored four goals, three coming in the first 3:30 of the match to lead the Mechanicville assault.

Chris Ciccarelli added a pair of goals and Marcus Tobin, John Pingelski, Kevin Charette and Riley Duesler found the back of the net as well for the Raiders.

Zach White and Glenn Prarie combined to make four saves between the posts for Mechanicville who with the win moves to 11-0-1 on the year.
