Diamond Results, Witches Top the Valley

While most people, myself included, are reluctant to put away their snow shovels some local baseball and softball squads took to the diamond on a chilly but dry Monday for season-openers.

Winning Pitcher:  Christian O’Brien – complete game 1 earned run

Hitting Stars:  Witches – James Ostrowski 3-3, 2 2B’s     Carson Mosher 2-4, 2B        Valley – Blake Wiegert 2-4, 2 RBIs     Gillespie 2-3, 2B

Hoosic Valley trailing 2-0 entering the final frame scored three times, highlighted by Wiegert’s two-run single, taking a 3-2 advantage to the bottom of the inning.  The Witches responded with a two out rally, John Walsh tying things on an RBI single, and after a pair of walks Christian O’Brien singled in the game-winner for the Greenwich “W”. Key Points:  In a game tied 47-47 midway through the final period, Lake George closed the contest with a 14-2 run to claim the Section II Class C boys title.  With the win the Warriors improve to 24-0 on the year and will move on to regional play, while Hoosick Falls finishes a fine season at 19-5. Panthers Move to the Finals, Lake George Top’s Spa Catholic

Thursday was semifinal night for the Class C boys at the Cool Insuring Arena with  league schools in both halves of the doubleheader.  Hoosick Falls and Saratoga Catholic came in looking to post “W’s” and setup an all Wasaren final on Saturday.

But the Warriors of Lake George weren’t buying in, as the number one Class C team in the state rolled to an 82-46 decision over Spa Catholic in the opening game of the evening.

In the nightcap Hoosick Falls took control early and held off a determined Maple Hill squad down the stretch, posting a 68-59 victory to advance to the Class C title game.

The Wasaren Again Enjoying Basketball’s Second Season

Over the years the league known as the Wasaren has undergone a number of changes. Until the early 70’s the league was recognized as the Washington County League. Six present day schools remain in the Wasaren from that era including Cambridge, Greenwich, Hoosick Falls, Hoosic Valley, Stillwater and Tamarac. Continue reading

Panthers, Raiders, Bengals On To The Semi’s

Three more Wasaren squads advanced to the semifinal round in their respective classes of the Section II tourney on Saturday.  In Class C boys the Panthers of Hoosick Falls, and in Class B girls Mechanicville and Tamarac earned quarterfinal victories and will continue their pursuit of a sectional title this week in final four runs.

Wasaren Teams Fare Well in Sectional Play

Fourteen Wasaren squads stepped on the floor Tuesday night as the Section II basketball tournament shifted into high gear.  Seven league teams on both the girls and boys side of things competed in the B and C classifications.

At night’s end three boys teams advanced with wins, while six of the seven Wasaren girls squads posted victories.

Sectional Roundup; Indians, Warriors Advance

The Section II basketball tournament kicked off Friday night with opening round action in Class C, and six Wasaren squads took the floor looking to extend their seasons with a “W”.

At night’s end only two teams, the Cambridge boys and the girls from Stillwater, were able to notch wins and advance to the next round of play.

Sectional Pairings, Who Can Make a Run

The Section II basketball committee has spoken, yesterday releasing the pairings for the upcoming tournament in girls and boys basketball.  Eight Wasaren girls teams and nine squads on the boys side of things will compete in the open format where everyone has the opportunity to compete.

Which league team, if any, can make an extended run in the second season?  Here’s a quick look.
