Tamarac Advances, Raiders Fall

Tamarac and Mechanicville stepped on the floor in Averill Park Wednesday night in separate semifinal runs, one win away from the girls Class B title game.  In a perfect basketball world an all Wasaren final would play out Saturday afternoon at Hudson Valley Community College.

But life isn’t Hollywood and while Tamarac punched their ticket to the championship game with a convincing 55-40 victory over Schalmont, Mechanicville’s opponent Voorheesville had other ideas pinning a 54-37 defeat on the Raiders in game one. Continue reading

The Wasaren Again Enjoying Basketball’s Second Season

Over the years the league known as the Wasaren has undergone a number of changes. Until the early 70’s the league was recognized as the Washington County League. Six present day schools remain in the Wasaren from that era including Cambridge, Greenwich, Hoosick Falls, Hoosic Valley, Stillwater and Tamarac. Continue reading

Panthers, Raiders, Bengals On To The Semi’s

Three more Wasaren squads advanced to the semifinal round in their respective classes of the Section II tourney on Saturday.  In Class C boys the Panthers of Hoosick Falls, and in Class B girls Mechanicville and Tamarac earned quarterfinal victories and will continue their pursuit of a sectional title this week in final four runs.

Wasaren Teams Fare Well in Sectional Play

Fourteen Wasaren squads stepped on the floor Tuesday night as the Section II basketball tournament shifted into high gear.  Seven league teams on both the girls and boys side of things competed in the B and C classifications.

At night’s end three boys teams advanced with wins, while six of the seven Wasaren girls squads posted victories.

Sectional Pairings, Who Can Make a Run

The Section II basketball committee has spoken, yesterday releasing the pairings for the upcoming tournament in girls and boys basketball.  Eight Wasaren girls teams and nine squads on the boys side of things will compete in the open format where everyone has the opportunity to compete.

Which league team, if any, can make an extended run in the second season?  Here’s a quick look.

Crossover Friday

Wasaren teams squared off with each other one last time Friday night in crossover games under the league’s new format.  Teams from the Battenkill division faced teams from the Hudson in a final run before sectional play.

Sunday at Skidmore College the championship for the girls and boys will be decided with Cambridge facing Tamarac at 6:30 in the girls game, and Hoosick Falls taking on Saratoga Catholic at 8:00 in the boys tip.

Red Raiders Defeat Cohoes

Freshman Devin Garland poured in 19 points, including five triples, to lead Mechanicville past Cohoes in a nonleague matchup Thursday night.

Nick Billert scored 16 points for the Raiders who ran out to a 40-25 advantage at the break, on their way to the comfortable victory over the Tigers.

With the win Mechanicville improves to 10-7 on the season and returns to action tonight when they host Fordians of Waterford in a Wasaren crossover game.

Mechanicville Tops the Falls

When Mechanicville and Hoosick Falls stepped on the floor Saturday afternoon both squads were coming off Friday night runs and the question was how fresh would the teams be for the 1:30 tip?

While both teams had plenty in the tank the Red Raiders used their quickness defensively and in transition to post a 55-44 victory over the visitors from Hoosick Falls. Continue reading
