Mekeel Christian Academy built a 22-11 halftime lead and took control with a 16-6 third period on their way to a 49-26 victory over Hoosic Valley to claim the Section II Class C girls title Friday night at Hudson Valley Community College.
Mekeel was led by their outstanding trio of scorers with Rebekkah Dean netting 20 points, Jessie Snow 12, and Elizabeth Singleton adding 11 points. The Academy riding a 23 game winning streak will next play in the state regionals.
Alex Rifenburg scored 12 points to pace the Valley who complete another fine season with a 19-5 mark.
Seven of the nine Wasaren girls squads will compete in sectional play this year but just one team is in action tonight. The Cambridge Indians play host to the Cairo-Durham Mustangs in a Class C play-in run. Continue reading

With the last week of the regular season upon us there’s a girls team in the Wasaren that has quietly gone about their business and put together a nice campaign. While traditional powers Tamarac, Hoosic Valley, and Hoosick Falls fill the first three slots in the league standings the Red Raiders of Mechanicville sit in fourth place with an impressive 10-4 league mark. A late season non-league run turned into an overtime affair in Greenwich Monday night, and the home squad did just enough in the extra session, outscoring Mayfield 9-7, to post the 49-47 victory.
Olivia Barnes had a huge night for the Witches pouring in 27 points to go with 18 rebounds to lead Greenwich who improves to 8-8 on the season with the “W”.
Mayfield (9-9), was paced by Sydney Sheldon with 18 points, and Camryn Meca who added 12 points on four makes from behind the arc.
Longtime rivals Hoosick Falls and Hoosic Valley will get together tonight at a pair of venues with plenty on the line for both the girls and boys squads. The girls run will play out in Schaghticoke while the boys take the floor in Hoosick Falls and the atmosphere at both will say it’s more than just another Friday night. Continue reading

There’s two weeks left in the Wasaren regular season and on the boys side of things the Panthers of Hoosick Falls set the pace, yet to be defeated in 10 league runs. The Falls are closely followed by Stillwater and Hoosic Valley both sporting 9-2 marks. Continue reading
Congratulations to this week’s Wasaren Sportsnet Player of the Week, Greenwich’s Bailey Winch.
Bailey scored 20 points in a 51-48 loss to Hoosic Valley on Monday, came back with 13 points on Wednesday at Tamarac in another close loss, but saved the best for Friday night dropping 20 points and a game winning 3-ball at the buzzer in overtime, giving the Witches the 57-55 victory over the Fordians of Waterford.
