This just in.  Jimmer Fredette can score the basketball. Always has, and until he chooses not to, always will.

The Glens Falls native showed his scoring prowess once again yesterday, pouring in 75 points for the Shanghai Sharks in a 137-136 defeat to the Beikong Fly Dragons in a Chinese Basketball Association contest.

Jimmer went for 62 in the second half including an astonishing 40 points in the final period.  He shot 24 of 34 from the floor including 7 of 10 from deep, and 20 of 21 from the free throw line.  Fredette scored with :07 remaining on an acrobatic drive giving the Sharks the lead before the Dragons won it at the buzzer. Panthers Falls in State Semifinal

67_hoosickfalls2The Hoosick Falls field hockey was tied with four-time defending state champion Whitney Point 2-2 in the second half before the Eagles exploded with four goals to close things out and post a 6-3 decision in the Class C state semifinals in Williamsville on Saturday.

Hoosick Falls finishes an outstanding season at 20-1, with regional and sectional championships in their 2018 campaign.

 

Stillwater Marches to State Final

The patient, relentless, season-long journey to the state championship game for the Stillwater girls soccer team took it’s final step on Saturday with a 4-0 defeat of Haldane in the Class C semifinals at Cortland High School.

State finalists year ago, the Warriors played with laser focus all season, determined to fight their way back for another shot at a state crown. They’ll have just that Sunday at 3 p.m. at Cortland HS when they take on Little Falls for Class C supremacy.

Brooke Pickett and Teya Staie with two goals each led the Warriors offensively while Stillwater keeper and the Warriors defense posted yet another shutout, their fifth in six post season outings in which Stillwater has outscored their opponents 34-1.

With a 21-0-1 mark in place, and their march to the finals complete, now it’s time for the Warriors to deliver with all the chips pushed to the center of the table.

Greenwich Runs to State Title

73_greenwichThe Greenwich girls cross country team knows quite a bit about covering distance on their feet, but Friday and Saturday they put in some big mileage riding to and from Long Island for the New York State Cross Country Championships held at Sunken Meadows in Kings Park.

After the four hour trek Friday, the Witches put on their running shoes Saturday morning and did what they do best, cover a 5K course faster than all their competitors, to win the Class C state title with just 38 points.  Bronxville finished a distant second with 105 points. Continue reading →

Ogdensburg Tops Cambridge-Salem

The Cambridge-Salem Indians traveled four hours north to Potsdam Friday night for their Class C state quarterfinal, and on a snowy night in the north country their football season came to an end.

The Blue Devils scored two first half touchdowns, and kept the Indians off the board until midway through the final period to post the 16-6 victory.

After forcing Cambridge-Salem to punt on their first possession Ogdensburg Free Academy drove 58 yards and Stephen Morley capped it with a 3-yard touchdown run and with the two-point conversion the Devils held the 8-0 lead.

The OFA defense held C-S at bay throughout, forcing two punts, a fumble and a missed field goal on the Indians first four possessions.

The Blue Devils scored their second TD right before the half when Jackson Troiano found MeSean Johnson on a 55-yard scoring strike and a 16-0 advantage at the half.

The Indians broke through with 5:49 remaining when Tommy English ran it in from 41 yards out, but the two point conversion failed and Ogdensburg closed things out for the “W”.

Cambridge-Salem completes another outstanding season finishing with a 10-1 mark and a Section II championship despite jumping up to the C classification this year after winning back to back state titles in Class D.

Four Wasaren Teams Hunt for a State Title

With high school winter sports practices underway this week there are four Wasaren teams still playing their respective fall sports, three hoping to capture a state title this weekend.

The Hoosick Falls field hockey team and the Stillwater girls soccer team will play in Class C state semifinals, while the Greenwich girls cross country team will race in the state championships on Saturday as well.  The Cambridge-Salem football team plays a Class C state quarterfinal on Friday with a potential state title berth two weeks out. Wasaren Sportsnet Player of the Week

Congratulations to Greenwich cross county runner Brynne Wright on being named this week’s Wasaren Sportsnet Player of the Week.

On Saturday at the Section II Cross Country Championships at Saratoga Spa State Park, Brynne won the Class C race covering the 3.04 mile course in 17:54, leading the Witches to the girls cross country sectional title.

Winning at the Sectional Championships is nothing new to the Greenwich junior, as her victory on Saturday was the fourth year in a row that she’s won the Section II championship race.

Congratulations to Brynne, our newest Wasaren Sportsnet Player of the Week.

 

Stillwater Advances to State Semi’s

At a time of the year when for most teams it’s typically more difficult to post victories, the Stillwater girls soccer team continues to make it look easy.

Saturday afternoon the Warriors took the short trip to Mechanicville for a state regional match with AuSable Valley and Stillwater followed their blueprint for success, hanging crooked numbers on the board in each half while throwing a shutout defensively in coasting to a 6-0 “W”.

The Warriors scored three goals on both sides of the break with Keelyn Peacock, Brooke Picket and Teya Staie all connected on a pair of scoring strikes.

Stillwater keeper Kiersten Conroy and the Warriors defense combined for the shutout, their ninth of the year with four of those coming in post season play.

Stillwater’s dominance from the regular season has intensified in the “second season” where in five matches they’ve outscored their opponents 30-1.

With the victory the Warriors travel west this weekend to face Haldane in a Class C semifinal at Cortland High School, just one win away from a shot at the state title.
