“Next man up.” A common saying in team sports used when a starter is sidelined and their replacement is expected to step in and get the job done. That man in Mechanicville is running back Evan Chapman. Last week the sophomore was called on after lead back Marc DeBates went down with an injury against Holy Trinity. Although it’s just the midpoint of the regular season, the race for the boys soccer title looks to be a three team affair. Front running and undefeated Mechanicville holds the narrow lead over Stillwater and Cambridge. Both the Warriors and Indians posted wins on Wednesday to draw closer to idle Mechanicville.
Stillwater 6 Hoosic Valley: Cooper Monost scored a pair of goals and four teammates added single scores as the Warriors ran over the Valley.
Brody Cepiel with a goal and three assists, and Grant Baker, Jack Rubinstein, and Nate Thrane with goals, rounded out he scoring for Stillwater.
Jake Zdonick made three saves for the shutout, Stillwater’s sixth in eight games.
Cambridge 3 Waterford 0: The combination of Patrick Robertson to Emerson Lopez clicked for a pair of scores to lead the Indians to the shutout victory over Waterford.
Just two minutes in Lopez took a Robertson feed and found the back of the net for the 1-0 advantage. It was more of the same minutes into the second half when Lopez finished a Robertson cross with a nice header, and the 2-0 lead.
Dan Medina wrapped up the scoring slotting the ball home off a find from Eli Robertson.
Cody Oldham with four saves earned the shutout for Cambridge who improve to 6-2 with the win.
Spa Catholic 2 Hoosick Falls 0: Two second half goals from Nick Condry and Dante Marin proved the difference as the Saints shutout the Panthers in Saratoga.
Jake Hart earned his first career shutout turning back six shots for the Saints.
Tamarac 2 Greenwich 1: Dylan Briccetti took a cross from Evan Petersen and finished with the game winning strike in the 75th minute, as the Bengals notched the victory at Clums Corners on Wednesday.
Tamarac held a 1-0 halftime lead off a Chase Ali tally midway through the first half.
Three minutes after the break Greenwich tied things when Colin Morencey found the range, setting up the late game heroics from Briccetti.
After the match both squads hold identical records at 3-4-1.

Stillwater 4 Mechanicville 1: In an early season get together between two undefeated sqauads, Stillwater scored a pair of goals in each half and posted the comfortable win over their neighboring rivals. Continue reading
