The winds of change have blown through the Hoosic Valley football program this off season as a new head coach takes over and the Indians step up in class.

Last season the Valley played in the D classification, and fought their way to a class D Super Bowl appearance.  This fall the Indians move up to class C and will compete in the  C North with Cambridge-Salem, Granville, Greenwich, Hoosick Falls and Lake George.

Leading the Valley into the 2019 campaign will be first year head coach Eric Baker, a Florida native who brings 15 years of experience in the sport as a player and coach, most recently as Wide Receiver/Defensive Back coach at Watervliet.

The new coach has been quite pleased with what he’s seen in the preseason thus far.  “The kids have been very receptive to the new schemes that we’ve been putting into action” said Baker.  Those schemes are part of the new identity being put into place on both sides of the ball that Baker describes as, ” A smash mouth spread and a bend but don’t break defense.” Continue reading

Cambridge-Salem Football Preview

As fall creeps ever closer we all anticipate what is sure to come over the next few weeks. The day’s grow shorter, apples will be picked and none of us can find the scraper the first morning there’s frost on the windshield.  One more thing we’ve come expect, Cambridge will win football games almost every weekend and compete for sectional, if not state championships.

Last season after years of dominating the Class D ranks, the Indians moved up to the C classification and never missed a beat going 10-1, with a Section II title and a state quarterfinal appearance.

While graduation in June took many key players with it, head coach Doug Luke certainly has a nice selection from which to fill the void. Continue reading

Stillwater Warriors Football Preview

stillwater warriorThe Stillwater Warriors coming off an excellent 2018 season where they compiled a 7-2 mark, will look to build on that this fall and will do so with a talented and experienced roster.

When head coach Ian Godfrey was asked about team leadership he responded simply, “The senior class.”  He does so with good reason.

Three of those seniors in quarterback James Galarneau, and running backs Mason Seymour and Luc Lescault lead an explosive, offensive attack that can score in bunches. Continue reading

Friday Roundup

While the Wasaren golf season wraps up it’s second week of play, the leagues soccer squads have begun their 2019 campaign with the girls and boys of Stillwater opening in impressive fashion.

Stillwater 2  Queensbury 1 OT:  A remarkable sidebar from the 2018 championship season for the Stillwater girls was the fact that never once trailed.  Yesterday in the championship match of the Meehan Invitational in Stillwater, a Brigid Duffy goal for the Spartans in the 56th minute put the Warriors on the wrong side of a 1-0 game.

Stillwater responded in kind, drawing even in the 65th minute on a PK by Teya Staie, and notching the win on a Paige Brinsko header in the second overtime, to turn back the Class A Spartans and win their season-opening tournament.

The Warriors move to 2-0 on the year and push their unbeaten streak to 25 games, a streak that will be tested the next time out when Stillwater will face AA opponent Colonie.

Stillwater 3  Doane Stuart 0:  A pair of goals from Grant Baker and a single strike by Issac Curtis led the Warriors to the “W” in the championship game of the Meehan Invitational on Thursday.

Tim Buchal with four saves combined with the Stillwater defense to earn the shutout as the Warriors improve to 2-0 on the young season.

Greenwich 8  Glen Falls 1: The Witches jumped out to a 5-1 lead at the break and cruised to the season-opening victory at Greenwich on Thursday.

The Witches Tess Merrill and Faith Ingber both tallied hat tricks with Cate Abate and Kiara Vasquez finding the range as well to lead the impressive Greenwich attack.

Golf

Hoosic Valley 5  Mechanicville 0:  Oliver Eckler fired the low round of 44 to lead the Indians to the sweep of Mechanicville in action at the Mechanicville Golf Club on Thursday.

The Valley’s Nolan Rafferty, Mitchel Jones, Brandon Watkins, and Brett Pruso all posted wins in their one on one matchups.

Hoosick Falls 5  Waterford 0:  In a match played at the Hoosick Falls Country Club, Ryan Bloomer torched the course, carding a 31 and showing the way in the Panthers shutout victory over the Fordians.

Mat Smith, Miles Smith, Alison Hathaway and Brady Hathaway all joined Bloomer in the winner’s circle for the Falls who improve to 5-0 with the “W”.

Cambridge 3  Stillwater 1:  Ben Epler, James Toleman and Lydia Fronhofer all notched wins for the Indians with Epler’s 43 claiming medalist honors, in action at the Saratoga Lake Golf Club on Thursday.

Logan Pickett won the Stillwater point with a victory in flight three.

Soccer Results; Warriors Win a Pair

soccer-ball1

A year ago the Stillwater girls calling card was a high powered attack that fueled the Warriors run to a state championship. On the turf yesterday in Stillwater it appears very little has changed.

Stillwater opened their season in style with their offensive prowess on full display shredding Schenectady 11-0.

Four Warriors scored multiple goals led by Broke Pickett’s four goal effort.  Paige Brinsko, Teya Staie and Kylee Peacock all added a pair of scores with Devon Wagner’s goal rounding out the Stillwater scoring.

Stillwater keeper Kiersten Conroy saved three shots to earn the shutout, while her counterpart Nicollette Gauf turned back 14 Stillwater shots.

On the boys side of things the result was much the same in an 11-1 defeat of Bolton/Warrensburg, that saw four Warriors score and seven different players pick up assists.

Grant Baker led the Stillwater assault with four goals, with Jack Rubenstein adding three, and Harry Rubenstein and Issac Cutler both finding the range twice to round out the Warrior’s attack.

Dante Corrireau scored the visitors lone goal on a second half strike.
