Girls Basketball; Witches Post Victory

A trio of Wasaren girls squads played in non-league runs on Thursday night with the Witches of Greenwich opening their season in impressive fashion.

Greenwich 72  Galway 27

Leading Scorers:  Witches – Molly Brophy 34       Marquita Gutasy 13       Tess Merrill 10    Galway – Beth Rapapi 9

Key Stat:  Greenwich backed a 15-3 first period with a 16-6 advantage in the second, taking a 22 point cushion into the break and coasted to the season-opening win from there.

Take Away:  Brophy hands Galway 34 leading a Witches attack that puts 72 points on the board their first time out.  While Wasaren competition will be stronger, Greenwich will be a handful for anyone.    Continue reading →

Watching Mechanicville defeat Catholic Central Tuesday night in their season-opener I came away thinking there’s a lot to like about this basketball team.

Mechanicville Bowlers Post Win over Corinth

After winning the bowling championship last year in the Colonial Council Mechanicville was told they wouldn’t be allowed to compete this year in the Colonial.  No problem.

On Monday the Mechanicville squad picked up where they left off posting a dominant win over Corinth as part of the Wasaren Division in the Adirondack League.

The Raiders held a 3686 – 2375 in total pins over the Tomahawks in the match at Hometown Lanes.

Leading the way for Mechanicville was junior captain Jacob LaFountain with games of 226 277 214 for a 714 triple.   Senior captain Joshua Kalwasinski fired a 690 triple with games of 175 259 and 256.

Sophomore Glenn Prarie added a 643 triple and sophomore Carmen Morizio  with a 494 triple all equaled a 4-0 match win for the Raiders.

Hoosick Falls Girls Basketball Preview

The Hoosick Falls Panthers and head coach Ken Facin welcome back eight returning players from a solid 2017-18 season with hopes of taking the next step this year.

Among the returning veterans are Lilian Hickey, Logan Thayne and Faith Adamczenko who Facin will lean on to provide leadership for this seasons version of the Falls.

Thus far Facin notes, “The girls have been outstanding.  They are accepting their role and working hard to improve as players and teammates everyday.”  Continue reading →

Raiders Top Crusaders

According to the old adage “It’s not how you start, but how you finish that matters”.  Well Tuesday night in Mechanicville the homestanding Red Raiders started fast and finished strong in posting a 66-50 victory over the Catholic Central Crusaders in the season-opener for both squads.

Junior Josh Germain buried a triple on Mechanicville’s first possession starting a 9-1 run that saw that Raiders scored the first four times they touched the ball.  Continue reading →

A pair of Wasaren teams were in action on Monday with the Tamarac girls and the Stillwater boys taking the floor in non-league contests.

Tamarac 66  Mohonasen 62

Leading Scorers:  Bengals – Emily Erickson 29      Lizzie Machnick 14          Mohon – Breanna Lott 23     Kateri Vumbaco 19     Megan Hart 11

Key Stat:  Tied after three periods of play Tamarac used an 18-14 advantage in the fourth to turn back a tough Mohan squad and notch the season-opening “W”.

Take Away:  Opening night for many teams is a challenge offensively.  Not the case here as Tamarac puts 66 on the board against a good opponent with Erickson handing Mohon 29, leading eight Bengal players in the scoring column.  Now a 10 day wait before their next run, an away get together with the Indians of Cambridge. Cambridge Girls Basketball Preview

cambridge pictureMore times than not when a team goes 25-2 and makes it to the state Final Four as Cambridge did just a year ago, the graduation stage in June forces a rebuild the following season.  And while the Indians graduated four players that will be missed in Helen Mooney, Grace Snyder, Victoria Dupuis and Haley Herrington, the cupboard is certainly not bare for head coach Bob Phillips.

Phillips, who assisted Tony Bochette last season, welcomes back five players who did some heavy lifting for the Indians a year ago.  Continue reading →
